Description

Now that Yale Avenue has been temporarily closed between Chapel Street and Route 34 is there a plan to place advisory signs in both directions well in advance of Yale Avenue notifying motorists to take Central Avenue of from either Chapel street if coming from the west or Central Avenue if coming from the west on Route 34 rather than being forced to great abyss that is Ella Grasso Blvd and Route 34? The signs erected last year were improperly placed. Assume the perspective of a motorist from outside the area when determining the best location for the signs. It would also be courteous to have a sign on the fence in the photo advising when the road will be reopened. Thanks.

You would think. New Haven has a lack of courtesy to drivers when roads are closed and detours usually lead to more detours. Try asking a cop for directions lol, they look at you like you have 3 heads and tell you they don't know which roads are open or closed and to keep driving. Thanks for all your informativeness

This street closure is far too long, given that most days there is no sign of any work being done on the closed street. Lazy, I considerate tournament organizers are abusing the neighborhood. Why does it take a month to set up a tent in the street?

This was the sign from last year - would have been better placed BEFORE Central Avenue rather than between Central and Yale since it's too late at that point.

Yale Ave is slated to reopen on Sept 8, but it is possible it will reopen earlier than that.

Agreed in both concerns above:
- Better signage would help those unfamiliar with the area during the tournament, who may be following GPS directions which don't take into account the temporarily closed street.
- Why does the street close so far forward of the event each year? The event is weeks away, and there doesn't appear to be any work being done on the street to date.

The street closes so far in advance so they can prepare and begin setting up for the event which begins August 16 and is a very large event.

I had suggested to someone last year to consider keeping the road open in one direction (open going from Chapel to Route 34 thus permitting one way traffic while also permitting the various set up activities to occur on the bowl side of th stree but I guess my words were wasted on the person I thought had influence or at least interest. Having attended the event for many years I've not seen much "set up" on the tennis court side thus making a poor argument to have the entire street closed for a considerable period of time. I realize we set our expectations low in the city and we end up getting just what we expect and accept. Too bad.

There is seldom any sign of work being done there. The extended street closure is NOT because setting up this event takes intensive labor. It is because the organizers are lazy and unorganized and feel they can inconvenience this neighborhood for as long as they wish. Unless there is significant work occurring every single day the street is closed, it is closed too long. Unless the police can verify that work is occurring every day, they should not chime in to defend is abuse of the public! You are defending a lazy, parasitic organization rather than attending to the interests of this neighborhood. Shameful!
