Description
"exit from right lane only" signs would greatly help the MANY NUMBERS of people who are not using the traffic circle correctly. Numerous accidents have been caused due to people exiting the traffic circle from the left lane, especially without signaling, causing an ENTERING car to slam on their brakes while the exiting car passes over two lanes of traffic to exit. Simple signs encouraging drivers to signal and use the right lane only to exit would prevent the issue.

WOW I'm so sorry about your friend's ticket! That's exactly the reason signs need to be posted. I didn't mean to say that you couldn't drive around the circle on the right only that EXITing should be from the right. Maybe signs (and road markings) should show the left lane for through traffic only. Either way, the city needs to decide what they want the rules to be and make it known to law enforcement.
I am in COMPLETE agreement that New Yorkers need to be better educated about roundabout use, but since they're not.... It wouldn't hurt for the city to make the rules clear through signage.
PS after doing a small amount of research, the NYS DMV and SafeNY.com state only this: "A driver entering a traffic circle, sometimes called a rotary, must yield the right-of-way to drivers already in the circle." Looks like it should be a state-wide initiative to make the rules more clearly stated!

Thanks for your post Anna! I don't know where the woman on the blog found this info since the state of Maine has no posted rules about rotarys, but its good to know she's trying to spread the word.
The state of Massachusets states to merge into the right lane and exit from the right.
The state of Connecticut states that to exit from either lane.
EITHER WAY, AT LEAST THERE'S A POSTED RULE.

Here's a good one for ya...the NYS DMV has listed this information SOMEWHERE. It says at the top that it's from the "Guidelines for Older Drivers" page of the DMV website HOWEVER when you go to the Older Drivers page at nydmv there is NO LINK to this page. I just found it floating around cyberspace.
