Description
Sign on 287N & sign on ramp from 208N to 287N have merge signs indicating merge, however this ramp & 287N do not merge, ramp becomes 3rd lane on 287. According to the MUTCD it appears a "Added Lane" Sign (W4-3) is more appropriate and the ramp should contain "Left Lane Ends" sign.
From what I gather from MUTCD:
"The Merge sign should not be used where two roadways converge and merging movements are not required."
"The Merge sign should not be used in place of a Lane Ends sign where lanes of traffic moving on a single roadway must merge because of a reduction in the actual or usable pavement width"

Your description of the location is wrong. The ramp is from NJ 208 North to I-287 South. Otherwise, you are correct. When 287 first opened, the left lane of 208 and the right lane of 287 did merge there, but after complaints the striping was changed to the current pattern. The signs don't match the current striping.
