Ever since the city bought out the York Hotel and shut it down as well as demolishing St. Germain Park, they think that they have fixed the problem! Yeah right.... the problem just moved further north.

Now we have to deal with this garbage! I have on occasion found the remnants of their work in the back alley between 106 and 107 Avenues. It's disgusting to find spent condoms and Kleenex tissues strewn about. Maybe the City should consider putting up "No Hooking Anytime" signs, similar to the "No Parking Anytime" signs?

City bureaucrats and urban planners did not think this one through. Sure, the downtown has clean-up its image now, but the problem persists and now it is a neighbourhood issue where residents must become members of a neighbourhood watch unit. The unit commander reports to a City official. That bureaucrat then takes the issue to City council. City council ruminates of it and decides to spend a little money on bus bench signage warning 'Johns' they had better beware. When we phone police in the middle of the night to alert them of suspicious activity they interviewer always asks (sometimes repeatedly) if there are drugs and weapons. HOLY COW!! - we are just reporting suspicious activity!! If it appears there is little chance of making a drug bust, police will arrive -- eventually. However, there is little hope of apprehending anyone because the perpetrators have disappeared back into the myriad of blackened service lanes, back alleys, lush dense foliage and dark backyards while we are on the line with an interviewer. Even when we show police a photo (yes, sometimes we are able to follow thieves and vandals and suspicious vehicles and photograph them and get plate numbers at 3 a.m.), the evil-doers still evade capture. It all seems hopeless and sometimes thoughts of an earlier time in our history when vigilante justice emerged to cure a problem come to mind and then we consider how many victims of crime end up being charged themselves. Whoever runs this City surely does not live in my neighbourhood.
