Description
Used to be lights for cars going east and going west would turn green at the same time unless someone was in the left turn spot(and thus as expected got a left turn arrow while the opposing approaching traffic had a red until the left arrow changed back from green to red. Now due to some bureaucratic, logistic, or other mix-up, the lights facing east or west STAY RED through an extra cycle unless a car is already in the stopped position to activate the sensor(s). Approaching traffic DO NOT GET A GREEN LIGHT UNLESS stopped traffic is already present. This kind of programming interrupts the smooth flow of traffic east or west, and has no apparent or good purpose in the location. (Same problem observed in a few other locations in tulsa - some kind of programming algorithm / glitch that prevents traffic from moving through an open intersection unless they get stopped first and sit through a red light unnecessarily)

Anyhow, the tangent is this - someone ADMITTED that 30 some years ago the DRIVERS ED class that they attended TAUGHT THEM TO SIT AT GREEN LIGHTS INSTEAD OF GOING AS THE DRIVERS MANUAL DIRECTED FOR 80 YEARS until last year. YES, TO SIT AT GREEN LIGHTS, EVEN SIT THROUGH THEM MORE THAN ONCE (I've seen this all too often , ONLY IN TULSA), when they're going to turn left..... duh.... IF you're at a light and going to turn left, IF NO TRAFFIC IS COMING FAST/MOVING right to left or left to right, and IF the road you're turning onto IS NOT BLOCKED, then PULL INTO THE INTERSECTION WHILE YOU HAVE A GREEN LIGHT !!!!!!!!!!!! simple! the oklahoma drivers manual said this very same thing until last year. pull into the intersection while you have a green light, and go ahead and proceed left when you have an opening or when the light turns yellow/coming traffic stops.... SIMPLE! (and gets more cars going and SAVES THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF GAS PER DAY JUST IN TULSA)

EVERY DAY ALMOST, I go past an intersection where THREE (3!) LIGHTS are RED and ONLY ONE IS GREEN, stopping traffic from 3 directions and only allowing traffic from ONE direction to proceed. This is not just silly/ridiculous when you watch it happen, it is WASTEFUL of peoples time and gas and maybe their patience if they remember how smoothly TWO WAYS USED TO GO AT ONCE INSTEAD OF ONE WAY.
and
IT MAY BE DANGEROUS IN SOME CIRCUMSTANCES, though that's not so often perhaps... IF someone sees the cross-ways lights changing while they are coming up on the intersection, they may rationally and naturally EXPECT A GREEN NEXT FOR THEIR DIRECTION (after all, that's how it was for 50 YEARS) as well as the COMING TRAFFIC OPPOSITE THEM.
but SURPRISE!!! only ONE direction gets a green (unless a vehicle is already in place it doesn't get a green, no matter they did before it got screwed up).
Sorry if this sounds a little rough, but someone up towards the top (governors office even ??) made a GREAT BIG BOO BOO, albeit perhaps under new world order orders.... sigh....

It only makes sense to program the lights JUST LIKE THEY WERE FOR DECADES, TO LET TRAFFIC GO THROUGH BOTH East/West OR North/South AT THE SAME TIME, even if a vehicle is APPROACHING the intersection just not there yet at the start of a 'GREEN CYCLE'...
To stop traffic in 3 directions just because of a programming glitch (or is it 'protocol' now?) wastes thousands of gallons of gasoline per week just in tulsa, and likewise thousands of minutes of time ....
.
Smart lights are GREAT! (I've been to st.louis, missouri recently - the lights there are mostly just timed and it's terrible compared to tulsa, so YEAH TULSA for that much.... :)
