Description

While new greenways are being built in Raleigh's less urbanized areas, the paths nearer to the city center, largest university, and arguably most popular city park seem to have been neglected for long enough. There are places on the Rocky Branch Trail where tree roots have heaved up and damaged the trail and places where the greenway disappears altogether to end in a muddy patch at Bilyeu St.

Many of the crossings with city streets are substandard, have poor connections on the other side, occur in dangerous or difficult locations (Ashe Ave), or do not receive proper tree maintenance. The recent improvement between Bilyeu and Nazareth is after a curve and was paved to connect in a sharp right angle after a downhill -- if you go there, you'll see all the tire marks in the grass where a bicycle missed the turn.

The city needs to consider the repair and resurfacing that should occur on the older sections of greenway to bring them up to standard with the rest of the greenway system so that these areas are no longer the black sheep.
