Enforce the MAINTAIN 55 rule in the tunnel. There are signs in the tunnel that say maintain 55. HELLO!!!! State police should ticket people exiting the tunnel at speeds less than 50. At least it would create revenue. Stop being so scary behind the wheel and drive people.

I agree with you 100% but this is kind of typical anymore. The government (local to national) regulates us to death but nobody is put in position to enforce the regulations. This is enforced bu the Police but nobody was hired to perform the added detail. Kind of like Newport News a few years ago passed a law about people throwing cigarette butts from a car. Now if a Police Officer was to pull someone over can you imagine the fallout from that, "with all the crime you took time to pull XXXX over..." Lawyers would have a field day with that in court.
Again I agree with you 100%, hey if they can hang out at the tunnel to grab someone doing 65, why not 35!?!?

Never going to happen until people learn to quit tailgating then they wont have to brake and causing chain reaction of all tailgater to brake as well slowing down the entire tunnel and the bridge behind it.
I purposely maintain safe speed and give myself space (several car length not 1/2 car length.) so I wont have to brake every 2 seconds.
If everybody just follow the law and maintain safe driving distance... I guarantee you that tunnel will never have traffic jam.

I will second your motion...if you are scared to drive through the tunnel then the solution to your problem is carpool or get on the bus. Do you even realize how much you are tying up traffic? The traffic jam is not by accidents IT IS YOU...GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!

They don't have to pull people over because it will cause a bigger traffic jam. All the police would have to do is traffic cameras and send people tickets in the mail.

I agree. Its the light at the end of the tunnel that scares them. It takes people on an average 10 seconds to figure out they are going up hill so they are now about 10 to 15 mph below the posted speed limit. So if you have 10 cars that do this the following 10 cars will be about 35 to 25 mph do to they have to put on their brakes to slow down for the first 10 and this goes on and on. by the time you get to the top of the tunnel people has found out there is no traffic and noes 80 to catch up to the front cars.

This is still a problem maybe you should report it to State PD who doesn't monitor this site. Just think of how much slower traffic will travel with a state trooper on the side of the road with a vehicle stopped. This will require you by state law to pull over or slow down. This would only make traffic worse not help.
Section 46.2-921.1 of the Code of Virginia states:
§ 46.2-921.1. Drivers to yield right-of-way or reduce speed when approaching stationary emergency vehicles on highways; penalties.
A. The driver of any motor vehicle, upon approaching a stationary vehicle that is displaying a flashing, blinking, or alternating blue, red, or amber light or lights as provided in § 46.2-1022, 46.2-1023, or 46.2-1024 or subdivision A 1 or A 2 of § 46.2-1025 shall (i) on a highway having at least four lanes, at least two of which are intended for traffic proceeding as the approaching vehicle, proceed with caution and, if reasonable, with due regard for safety and traffic conditions, yield the right-of-way by making a lane change into a lane not adjacent to the stationary vehicle or (ii) if changing lanes would be unreasonable or unsafe, proceed with due caution and maintain a safe speed for highway conditions.
B. A violation of any provision of this section shall be punishable as a traffic infraction, except that a second or subsequent violation of any provision of this section, when such violation involved a vehicle with flashing, blinking, or alternating blue or red lights, shall be punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor.
C. If the violation resulted in damage to property of another person, the court may, in addition, order the suspension of the driver's privilege to operate a motor vehicle for not more than one year. If the violation resulted in injury to another person, the court may, in addition to any other penalty imposed, order the suspension of the driver's privilege to operate a motor vehicle for not more than two years. If the violation resulted in the death of another person, the court may, in addition to any other penalty imposed, order the suspension of the driver's privilege to operate a motor vehicle for two years.
D. The provisions of this section shall not apply in highway work zones as defined in § 46.2-878.1.

City issue here, leave the blog open untill corrective measures are in place
enforcement will only cause delays (Guest)
I have an idea that will allow everyone to maintain 55 in the tunnel. Let the state hire enough people to drive everyone through the tunnel. Set it up like a ferry. Pull up onto the back a truck load enough vehicles. Let it get to the other side of the tunnel at the correct speed and then unload on the other side. This is not reasonable and the only that really can be done is to make sure people know how to drive. I have an idea that one of the people that want this left open take out advertisements in newspapers nationwide to try to fix this problem. Again this is NOT a CITY problem but is a STATE problem. VDOT doesn't monitor this site. I think another issue that would fix this problem is widen this to 8 lanes. Again VDOT can add tolls like they are at the other tunnels to fix this problem. Please call VDOT and get a work order number and see if you can keep us informed on the status on what the state is doing. Make sure you are aware what you are asking to have done and what it will cost tax payers one way or another.

Sarcasim is not the answer, The city and state monitor these sites and will respond. The web pages are printed and there is a hard copy that can be given to the correct department. This way there is a paper trail and the issue can be fixed. You do not get that with a phone call. Once you hang up, there is no paper report.
