The Dept. will be installing additional bike racks this summer - which will occur in July. We will add this location to our list. Thanks for posting the request.
That's great DOT. Will extra money get us more bike racks? Lisa, sounds like you should mark the locations for rack requests you have in those locations!
The dept. would install a bike rack if purchased privately but it's important to keep with the standard type used by the city. It's important to note that we only install bike racks on public property. Typically, if we had bike racks available, we would wait until we have at least 8 - 10 prior to installation, as it's not cost effective for us to install one or two at a time. We will be ordering bike racks for summer installations no later than the beginning of July. For more information you can contact the department by sending an email to: transportation@newhavenct.net
The overall cost of a standard city bike rack, including shipping and installation is $300. The department would cover the cost of shipping and installation if a standard type was purchased and added to the department's bike rack order through private funds. The individual cost of each bike rack is $130.00.
As long as these parameters are met, we will install the city standard bike racks at requested locations.
Use Dependent - ( Are requested locations for install commonly used by cyclists to lock their bikes?)
Available Footprint - (Can a bike rack fit within the requested location?)
Surface Conditions - (Will the existing surface layer sufficiently support a bike rack?)
Public vs. Private - (We only install bike racks on public property - sidewalk installs)
Existing Racks - (Are bike racks already installed in the area?)
Note: We will also install double inverted-u bike racks in residential areas where there are multiple apartments in one building. The individual cost of this type increases to $330.00
Installations can take time - due to delays as a result of weather/season, constructions projects, scheduling conflicts, the ordering and receiving process, etc.
