Description
Around 11.30, 11.45 this morning I was waiting for the walk signal at the intersection of Orange/Cold Spring St. near the park. The east-west route had a red light, and I watched as a Public Works van (CT lic. 207-NH, van 39) driver quickly looked both ways and then drove right through the red light. He turned on Anderson St., and I walked that way to give myself the opportunity to see him then drive the wrong way on Anderson Street too... When I happened to notice a police car a block away, I thought, "Ok, I'll ask if this is kosher," and received a fairly roundabout/evasive answer from the cop, who did tell me several times that it is my right to file a complaint with public works. I'm not prepared to go that far right now but I'm posting this (long-winded complaint) here to see if anyone else has made similar observations of late...

I just watched Public Works truck 97 Speed Up to go through the red headed East Bound at this exact intersection while talking on his two way.
There was a girl at the crosswalk who was forced to stop in her tracks as he accelerated through the red. I also nearly pulled out in front of him on my bike.
This was at 10:00 on Sunday 5/17/2009.

This is a problem I've seen many times in our neighborhood and I think it's something the city needs to be pushed to work on. Whether it's public works vehicles, police, school buses, the Yale shuttle or whoever else driving dangerously through our neighborhood, we deserve to live on walkable streets and should have the expectation that our public servants are the first to follow the law.
I'd like to organize a group of neighbors in Northern East Rock to address the issues of traffic calming and crime. I've been walking door to door campaigning and literally every house complains about those two issues.
If you'd like to get involved, please email me at justinelicker@gmail.com.

I'm hosting a meeting tonight (Tuesday, June 9) to discuss traffic and crime issues in Northern East Rock. The meeting will be at Wilbur Cross High School at 7pm. Please come and help us design an overall plan for addressing these issues in East Rock. And email me at justinelicker@gmail.com if you can't make it but want to be involved.
