Description
The historic Cohoes Theater building at 12 White St. is going to be torn down this fall, unless we, the concerned citizens say, "NO!" and do something about it!
This beautiful Art Deco-style movie house was built in 1941, and it would be a tragedy if we just let the City of Cohoes tear it down!
I couldn't believe my ears when I heard it on the news!! I thought the City of Cohoes was trying to revitalize the Remsen/Ontario/Columbia St. area, and bring back some businesses to this historic town!
Why would they want to tear down a building like this? It only needs relatively minor repairs (when compared with some of the other crumbling buildings around this area.)
We have a few businesses slowly coming back to this city, (like the Bread and Jam Cafe for example), and I think it's small businesses like these that we need to help revitalize all these old, dilapidated towns in New York!! Why would we want to wreck our history like this by letting the Cohoes Theater fall to the wrecking-ball??
We have to SAVE OUR HISTORIC BUILDINGS!!!

The building needs far more than "relatively minor repairs."
There is nothing left inside, and the marquee is totally gone, the brickwork is crumbling -- you cannot save everything and this one is beyond repair.
It woujld be far better to take action to save the mixed retail/apartment building across the street if it can still be saved.

Doesn't anybody around here realize we need to save history?!?!? Why do we keep tearing down historical landmarks around here, and then pretend we're going to build something worthwile, when, in fact, all that will probably go there is another needless drugstore!!!
But I'll bet that lot will stay vacant for the next 5 years due to New York's ubiquitous "Red Tape" Policies. Mark my words: That lot will stay empty until 2015.
