The "politicians and bureacrats" have been working very hard for many years to try to bring this project to fruition.
Obviously not hard enough. I'm shocked that none of the local business haven't sued the Road Commission & the city of Rochester Hills. Fewer Excuses - More Action.
This is the worst pavement of any I have to drive regularly! PLEASE fix it. The Road Commission comment below says next year...please don't delay that!
Waiting until next year a mistake. The driving surface is pothole patch on top of pothole patch. The M-59 construction traffic has destroyed the road surface as they drive to and from the Crooks Rd asphalt plant every day.
The intersection at Crooks & Avon-Industrial Dr, where the trucks turn left to the AJAX asphalt plant, is a head on collion waiting to happen as vehicles bounce thru a green light or slide to a stop on the uneven surface.
How about a temporary emergency two inch resurface with the same ashphalt plant the trucks resupply with every day.
Its an emergency situation. Road is dangerous in dry conditions, when wet, ice or snow, its even worse.
This needs attention now, not next year. Someone going to get hurt because of the poor driving surface.
I moved to Rochester Hills in 1987 and this area was nothing but a strip of pothole patches. Over 23 years and it's never been fixed. Time to do something about it!! Why has it been like this for nearly a quarter century!
The has to do with road funding. According to US Census Bureau data, since at least 1964, Michigan has been among the bottom 10 states in the nation in per capita road funding. That means that the residents of nearly all other states have been paying more, on a per capita basis, to maintain their roads for at least 45 years. The bottom line is we get what we pay for.
The worse news is that things are likely to worse rather than better in coming years. Road funding revenue (generated from the state gas tax and vehicle registration fees) has been going down for 5 years after being essentially flat for many years before that. At the same time, all of the costs associated with maintaining roads have been going up at rates far greater than the rate of inflation.
As a result, the Road Commission no longer has money to resurface roads (the long-term solution to potholes) unless federal funds are available. At our current rate of federal funding (which is also likely to go down), it will take us 143 years to resurface the roads that are federal-aid eligible. That's the good news. There is NO money to resurface those roads that are not classified as federal-aid eligible.
So, take a look at the roads you drive today. This is probably the BEST condition they are likely to be in for a long time.
What's the solution? Raise the gas tax and/or the vehicle registration fees. Problem: The state legislature, which controls these funding sources, has no interest in raising any revenue. So, as noted, we get what we pay for.
This part of the road was listed in the stimulus package that was approved by Obama in 2009. It is 2011 now and we are till waiting. It is ridiculous, I drive back and forth on Crooks to get to my house on Hamlin and there isnt even one lane to use that does not have a pot hole. At night time when it is very low trafic, I drive on the oncoming side just to avoid damage to my car!
I spent all of last year watching 59 get expanded, and all the exits get cleaned up, why make Crooks wait???

This project was never approved for stimulus funds. We proposed more than $300 million worth of projects that we could have used stimulus funds on. In all we got less than $25 million. There were a lot of worthwhile projects that did not receive funding. We did not select which projects received the stimulus funds -- that was done by the Oakland County Federal Aid Committee.
Please see previous note. Bottom line: Michigan has underfunded its roads for the last 45 years. This is what happens when there is not enough money to maintain the roads.
Crooks road is nothing but one giant washboard of potholes between M59 and Hamlin. When I blow out a tire, I'll be going after the city to pay for the repairs. This is the most ridiculous road in the city right now!
Over the last quarter century that this area has been like this, there have been an awful lot of projects in the area that are nice to have but were not necessary. Roundabouts at Hamlin and Livernois, resurfacing Adams, for example. Although appreciated and make driving better, the situation at the M59 Crooks overpass is atrocious and should have been moved near the top of the list years ago. I'm sure the powers that be could have made a deal with the asphalt production that was RIGHT THERE to put an overlay over the affected area after some grinding was done.
I understand this would not be a long term fix, but it would at least make that stretch bearable for a few more years.
I see no valid excuse for the road with that kind of traffic to be in such pathetic shape for over a QUARTER CENTURY.
Although not the greatest, why are they redoing the stretch of Tienkin from Livernois to Rochester and adding another roundabout, or trying to pave Washington which apparantly nobody wants, recapping Walton although choppy and bad, but not near as bad as Crooks, when we have such a horrible situation at that overpass as well as a bridge at Livernois and Avon that is collapsing.
BETTER PRIORITIES PLEASE.

Traffic Control:
One NB and SB through lane will be maintained throughout project. Intermittent on/off ramp closures.
