Speeding First Student Buses

If you are going to speed anonymously through New Haven, don't do it with your employers name plastered on your bright yellow bus. I've been home for 3 weeks now and have watched First Student Buses speeding well over 25mph posted limit both north and south on Front Street. 8:55-9:20 heading North, 1:30 ish, heading South, late afternoonish heading north. Our houses are built on SAND. Speeding over potholes and manhole covers causes them to BOUNCE and SHIFT. Craziness. I'll get video this week.

It took speed humps to amerliorate the situation, but it worked.

  • Today I saw bus 851 down by YNHH on Frontage Rd at 7:15. The Driver had earbuds in. Yes, there were kids in the car.

  • Standing on the corner of Goffe Terrace and Norton Street waiting for the Z bus each morning, I count at least three buses out of the many speeding to make the light on this corner. Needless to say besides putting the kids on the bus in harms way, the kids walking to Hillhouse are in danger as well!!! If not NHPD, then the school bus companies need to step up to the plate and police their own drivers. Perhaps sitting in unmarked cars at highly traveled intersections might put a dent in these speedy drivers!

  • I give them a 50% chance of going the proper speed.

  • Buses are big and heavy and when driven recklessly (speeding is reckless) can cause great injury and damage. Slow down!

  • MSK, bring wine, not tea. Crumpets are gross. May I suggest any pastry from Marjolaine? Oh, bring your video camera. We don't have one, or I'd have used it already.

  • You poor thing. We shall come over and join you on your deck over crumpets and tea whilst watching those buggers speed on by. I say, we should take video of it.

  • Still at it, still exceeding the limit in my area Lewis to Chatham Streets. Not so bad in the AM, outrageous in the PM. Open invite for anyone to stop by, enjoy the view from the deck, and witness it yourself.

  • Enforcing more QOL violations like loud music blasting and speeding would help restore some civility to the city. I am a bit skeptical about the NHPD's numbers on these though. People will believe it when they see it happen.

  • Why doesn't anyone here talk about the speeding cars and the cars that are driven around with LOUD music at all hours of the day and night in Fair Haven.

Alderwoman Erin Sturgis-Pascale ran for alderwoman on a safe streets platform, well in the time she has been on the job it has gotton worse. Everytime I see her in the paper she's talking about Front st, Lewis st and Grand Ave (near front st). I guess she does not know her ward extend beyond these streets. We need someone who can do the whole job and push for what they say they are going to do.

I have emailed her in the past and she couldn't even reply. I have Alderman Rodriguez respond to my see click fix post and have even gotton action from him.

Alderwoman Erin Sturgis-Pascale needs to go along with Mayor Johnny and find a new job.

  • In East Rock and Wooster Square they buy you apizza and cold beer if you catch a video like this one! Come on, Fair Haven!

  • The mayor was here for a tour of Front St just a couple days ago. He said he would look into getting this issue resolved. I hope he follows through and can be counted on to do what he says.

  • Bus #220 @ 2:09 PM was driving 25mph going south on Front St. THANK YOU bus #220. Many of the south bound buses were driving much better this afternoon. It is now 4:14PM and the last 4 buses heading North towards the bus terminal were driving in the normal, expected, outrageous fashion.

  • Mrs. Kravitz here with an update...I actually thought today may have been a school holiday...only 4 buses (2 travelling "fast") between +/- 9:10 and 10 AM. Were our concerns heard? More this afternoon...

  • That may be an "Aces" bus in the video, but 99.9% of the time it is a First Student Bus. I am on, or looking at, Front St from my home office and have been watching this for almost three years. I have called First Student many times with bus numbers. Using video is a good idea.
