Description
I sometimes work at one of the Yale buildings, 301 Prospect Street, and often I've seen a New Haven police cruiser idling in the parking for hours at a time--sometimes all day. Today the car was running, the window was open, and the officer was napping.

New Haven cops shouldn't be guarding Yale buildings. They have their own police force. Why should residents' tax dollars go to protect the property of the biggest tax cheat in town.

New Haven cops don't guard Yale buildings unless a crime has been committed. It sounds like he/she is "hiding" so he/she can sleep or stay away from people that may have complaints. If the car is there all the time maybe you should get the car number which is on the side of the car top of the car and license plate, time of day, male/female black, white, hispanic or asian and report it to the chiefs office....(203) 946-6333. Officers are suppose to be patrolling the streets when they are not on an investigation, not napping in parking lots.

I'll check out those details next time I see the car and report it to the department. I'm pretty sure it's a city car and not Yale, but I'll double check that too before calling it in to the appropriate office. Thanks!

Poonuts if it were a major crime at a Yale facility both agencies would work together as NH would investigate..eg.. the Annie Lee murder

I agree that police should be patrolling but at times they need to park so they could write their reports; sometimes multiple reports, the only downtime to do so is when they are on shift and all is quiet. Also police officers are not supposed to leave their patrol cars off for an extended period of time while on duty due to the fact that they have a bunch of electronic equipment in the car that will drain the battery quickly if left off for too long. Also Yale Police are New Haven Police if you read their badge which means that they could basically do everything that a NH Police Officer can do. Yale Police are NH Police that are employed by Yale to protect the Yale Community and any surrounding neighborhood that might have Yale Property or Yale faculty, staff, or students.

The car is #62 today. The officer is male. He has been in the parking lot for more than 6 hours at a time every day for the past week and several days last week with the car idling the entire time. I have never noticed him writing any reports. He was sleeping both times I walked by him today.

That's the same car # of the cop who would park for two hours on County street , while construction on the Prescott Bush senior Housing was under way. It might be a case of OT, The cop might have worked the night shift and is stretching it into a 24 hr affair, on County it was a strange investigation that suited it's purpose.

SIX HOURS?
unless he can write reports in his sleep, and they are 118 pages long with extended footnotes, it sure sounds like he is just hiding from his duties.

Totally off the subject, but what's the deal with washing the police cruisers at the Rt 80 car wash? I drive by every morning and see at least one cruiser there like clock work. If this comes out of the officers pocket, then no problem. If we are paying for this, then switch to a sponge and bucket down at the station please....a little elbow grease goes a long way. I'll throw in the $1 "free" tree air freshner.

If we are wrong then someone please say, "no he's on an hour break for a 12 hour shift." Maybe we are too quick to judge sometimes without knowing the whole story.

Is he still there?
