Description
Since January a young boy or child has been riding a four wheeled ATV with no license plate around the streets of Hillside Acres. I thought that there was an ordinance or law against this? The boy looks barely old enough to ride a bicycle let alone a motorized one. Where are the parents? Where are the police?

i would think that the town would be worried about being sued if this kid hurt himself or if he hit someone else while riding on the roads.
we had a similar case down here in Springfield.

Quad Riders: I don't mine you kids out having fun and riding on the trails, but just keep in mind that this is a residential neighborhood, with traffic laws, zoning regulations and noise ordinances, and not a rural setting.
Be respectful of the residents' right for peace and quiet, and then they might just return the favor.
StreetRider: your comment "why don't you liberal hippies come out and say somthing instead of crying up a storm...?"
We were also once young and naive...and if someone did come out and confront us, guess who's house would then be targeted for vandalism?

Riders: I don't believe the big issue is you riders taking public roads to the trails. I believe the issue is the level of noise and the perceived lack of respect of the homeowners right to acceptable noise levels.
If you would proceed quietly without the constant revving of your engines, then I think home owners would be more tolerant, so lay off the throttle and the hot dogging and see if things change.
I was young once and I did ride myself, so I do understand.

I am a nationally-certified motorcycle safety instructor who lost a classmate many years ago because his older brother was "just having fun" on a minibike after dark in a prairie. The brother ran over Joe and crushed his skull.
I cannot believe there are so many ignorant people commenting on this.
Folks, riding ATVs on public roadways is illegal for some very good reasons. To engage in name-calling and ageism is unproductive.
ATVs are unlicensed motor vehicles because they CANNOT be licensed without proper equipment, and are never insured for street riding.
They are often too loud (don't have street-legal mufflers) and wake people up. They don't have headlights and other lighting (nor mirrors) so they are less visible.
In 2004 in Pennsylvania, there were 241 ATV rider injuries and 20 fatalities in on-road incidents.
This issue is becoming more widespread across the country. Be aware that new strategies are being implemented by law enforcement to put a stop to it and to save necks and lives.
I will close by asking you these questions: How would you feel if one of those fatalities was someone you know or love and you didn't do anything to stop it? And how would you feel if you are one of those who posted "Leave them alone" or "Let them ride" in this thread? And how would you feel knowing that by saying those things, you are just encouraging people to break laws? What does that say about YOUR character? What if you became Joe's older brother because you were "just having fun?"

Hello, I am a dirt bike rider in an area where there is no legal destination for riders to go besides our own property and other properties we take time to get consent forms. Last summer I used to ride my Honda zr 200 5 times a week totalling 120 hours of riding. I do not ride reckless, in fact I obey every street sign and law besides the fact of me riding. I always rid at high gear at low rpm's on slower roads where there are a lot of houses. I ran onto a fellow rider, he is a legal street rider and he told me of some issues I am now aware of that house owners tend to be blind of. Acceleration. All bike, steel legal or not are very loud when accelerating at a faster rate. I do it all the time, but I never speed.
Here's what I have to say conserving everyone. If the child is riding recklessly, like these baboons then find them and confront them at their house. If the child is passionate about riding, they must be taught the right way. It's up to you guys to take a second, don't yell, and share your consensus.
Let me tell you about my experience. I have only 1 track in my area that can get boring, so I went riding down a road I never went down before. I am aware of how far the police station is so I know I can only ride in uncharted territory for 10 minutes before coming across a cop. A month later I got a single complaint from an older lady. She waved me down and I graciously stopped and listened. She had a problem with noise, without argument I agreed and kept to my word. She waved me down later to thank me for my efforts to lower the noise but enjoy a peaceful ride.
My neighbors are super friendly and come forward to me, countless times they warned me about cops just down the road. I took time to watch YouTube bike accidents, to watch the dangers. Im 16 now and I pasted my driver's test with almost perfect, soon to get my motercycle license. As a thought full rider of those around me I start to see the flaws on box riders, aka cars. Always on their phones, blowing through stop signs. I actually confront them on my bike, which is illegal on the road, because I expect they would do the same if I were driving unsafe.
Put it like this, there is a good side and a bad side, both meet the consequences because the other side doesn't get help. I don't support ignorant trashy riders.
My grandfather died that summer when I road the most, I was only pulled over once, mainly because the bike was off and I was on a pier watching the sun set. The cop asked questions and he did mention that I was a respectful rider, followed street signs, but he said I can't be on the road. I told him why I road so frequently so he told me this. "as long as I don't receive a complaint that you are a reckless driver, we will leave you alone for now, I know your a smart kid, but please make it easier for us by getting your motorcycle license so I can tell the people who call about you that your licensed."
Riders: being respectful goes a long way, don't be an a-hole when your riding or you won't be riding at all.
House owners: contacting g the police is OK, but here is a fact, it is illegal for cops to chase riders on the road, legal or not it is the cops fault for any injuries the kid gets on during the chase. I advise to wave them down and talk to them, or descretely find out where they live. Talking to the parents won't do much as my parents knew I was riding and would rather me outside then playing video games and wasting away a perfectly good life.
Fun fact about what the instructor said about dirt bike accidents, 78% of motorcycle (including illegal bikes as well) accidents involve a car, I know some personal experiences that many drivers have a personal vendetta against motorcycles(and dirt bikes) that even tried to cut me off or push me off the road almost creating an accident. This is why I am encouraging safe riders. You can't stop them from riding, it's just like a favorite game, don't expect to take it away without them finding another way to play it.
If anyone questions any percents I can link all primary resources on this matter explaining this issue on both sides. To me all it sound like are a bunch of rude kids riding, making a bad name for riders like me, and house owners that are stepping out of their power to stop it.
