I've moved to this area from downstate about 3 years ago and I have to say that the lights on this road are absolutely absurd. Just about everything about them is awful everywhere on Crescent Road. On the way home during rush hour a commuter hits just about every single light on the way home. Almost every time I drive home the lights alternate. Instead of alternating lights why not have them synced so traffic can move easily and facilitate a drive home? Its no wonder that traffic congestion cease to exist when even one of the two lights on Crescent west of the bridge are blinking orange. The light in the CVS lot takes 32 seconds to turn back. This is usually for, at most, 4 cars! It takes me 8 minutes to get from my work to this exit but an additional ten minutes to drive 1.2 miles further. Traffic lights should be made to ease traffic, not to slow it down which seems to be the mantra for this entire area.

The traffic lights are controlled by demand sensors in the roadway. In order to sync up the lights you would need to link them and to set rules for times of day for them to be sync'd, or else leave them sync'd all the time, and this would cause problems when there is no traffic, since the cars getting the red would have to wait for the cylce to complete.
I agree that it is a problem, but the real problem is too many cars and too much urban sprawl for this area.
These roads were only designed to handle 1/10th the capacity they now have.
The solution is to make the roads 4 lane to allow a greater volume of traffic trough.
DOT has planned for this, and on the bridges they replaced that were single lane each side, they are double with turn lanes.
At some point, the state and county will make Crescent, and Grooms 4 lane roads, but it will be many years.
I-87 also need to be made into an 8 lane highway, like I-287 was in NJ.
