Description
There has been an ongoing problem with a man named Bill P. for more than a month on my street. He is homeless and lives in his car often. His car was on my street on Vandeusen. He was told by Perry's to move it off of the street last night due to the fact that it had been sitting there for more than 3 weeks. The engine is blown in the car. Last night Bill pushed the car )with the help of a friend ) in front of my house on Vandeusen St. I told him to move it or lose it because I was calling KPD.. He then pushed it around Broadway to M&L Nail Salon across from Perry's where it sits right now as we speak.. I called the police last night at 8pm and reported this behavior. NO RESPONSE. I called back around 8;20.NO RESPONSE. I called again at 8: 30 and was told that an officer would check this out.. STILL NO OFFICER SHOWED UP. I can see the car from my window. By 9pm I gave up.. I watched 3 KPD cars go down Broadway and not one stopped and looked at the car. Not one called me or stopped at my residence to ask me about this problem.. They ask your name, phone number and sometimes your social security number.. Why? because I live on Vandeusen St.. This is B.S in CAPS.. This man is a problem. He urinates by the car. has defecated by Perry's building and he lives in his car, but KPD has said it is registered and the tags are good, but the car does not run.. For that fact alone it should be removed from the city streets. Now it is this poor lady's problem. She has a great business and does not want riff-raff parking in her lot.. What a shame no one is doing anything.. I can not solve this on my own.. I need help!!!!

It's not important why he is homeless. It's not important that his engine is blown.
Pushing people down is never the answer. Pushing them around the corner or down the street or all the way to the next town doesn't work either. You obviously have never learned that in your life and perhaps you have always pushed people around.
Thats the problem with the world today. Everyone wants someone else to solve their problems.

I called Family (331-7080) , talked with Zack, left my name and number and told them the link to this problem.
Let's set a two week window to get this resolved. That would be Tuesday July 13.
I'll put updates on the matter here.

Where are homeless people in Kingston supposed to go for help?
Furthermore, what are their rights to exist in City limits? They are still citizens, and if committing no crimes, what right do any of us have to interfere with their chosen lifestyle?
I understand this guy had a previous post about him, and he may be an exception to this.
BUT There has been a lot of posts recently about homeless on this board, and it is somewhat disheartening. It is not disheartening that we are discussing it, but in fact that the tone of "get them out of here" flies very high.
Gerald, thanks for being proactive, but what is the"Family" that you called? was it the family of the person in the car? Or is it a local shelter?
And on that note, What is the local shelter for Kingston? what's its address?
And lastly, if these people know about the shelters, and arent using them.... why arent they?

I am assuming that the "Family" referred to is Family of Woodstock. Among other services, Family provides shelters, emergency food pantries, court advocates, and case management services. They have several locations locally:
Woodstock Office:
16 Rock City Road
Hotline: 24 hours (845) 679-2485
Walk-in: 9:15 a.m. - 9:45 p.m.
Ellenville Office:
221 Canal Street
9:00 am - 6:00 pm Mon, Wed
9:00 am - 4:30 pm Tues, Thurs, Fri
Hotline: 24 hours (845) 647-2443
New Paltz Office:
10:00 am - 5:00 pm Mon - Fri
Hotline: 24 hours (845) 255-8801
Kingston Office:
39 John Street
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Mon - Fri
Hotline 24 hours: (845) 338-2370
In addition to Family of Woodstock, the Department of Social Services can provide some resources. Unfortunately, many of the local resources are currently strained, and there is often a long waiting time.
As far as I know, the Darmstadt Shelter is currently the ONLY homeless shelter in Kingston. Previously, people were also housed at the Family Inn on Broadway, but that has since closed.
Darmstadt Shelter
40 Thomas Street
Kingston, NY 12401
(845) 331-1395
Fax: (845) 340-1753
Email: darmstadt@familyofwoodstockinc.org
Program Hours: 24-Hour Access
As for why people are not using the shelters, it may be a number of things...there may not be room available. Some people may not know how to access these resources. For others, it may be more comfortable to sleep out in a park than on a cot next to a stranger.
Thank you, Gerald, for being so proactive. I agree with the above poster...it would be great to see others join in to solve the problem of homelessness in the city, rather than to try and run the homeless out.

The police blotter shows a police response at Vanduesen St at 8:08 PM on June 28th. Maybe you just didn't see them come over and handle the call. You can see the police blotter showing a response at http://www.kingston-ny.gov/filestorage/76/78/921/06282010.pdf
I don't believe that they would ever ask you for your social security number unless they were arresting you.
As long as a car is legally registered and parked there isn't much anyone can do about it.

And Socrates code of human conduct was "The unexamined life is not worth living." As a code of conduct, we can say that he meant that it is very important for each person to spend time in deep contemplation of such ideas as justice, right and wrong, truth and beauty and then to insure that they live their own lives in conformity with the right and the good. This is as opposed to merely existing from day to day with no regard for anything beyond one's personal comfort and happiness.
No was or is judging you. We're just questioning what you are putting out on a public forum. Keep in mind, another saying ... When you point a finger in blame at another person, you have three fingers pointing back at yourself.
As a community we can help each other -- including you and including this man who obviously has a problem. He doesn't deserve punishment -- he needs help.

Via Family and DSS and Temporary Assitance and Adult Protective services, the incident has been accepted, written down and will be acted on (noon, wednesday, june30)
I have no idea what the outcome will be but I get a call back or will call in for disposition tomorrow.
Let me say, by good luck or whatever, the police were very helpful, Family cannot! go out, but must get a call FROM the client, they would help them get to social services, and social services could OFFER help which can be refused.
Adult protective services can take action IF there is a risk of danger to the person or the public.
But note: this is a very very very free country and it is very hard to take somebody away without there being 1) a clear violation of law and 2) the proper agency that enforces the law. So you gotta keep on truckin'
The hard work all you people are doing is worthwhile and appreciated. At the end of this, lets all take note of what was done, what worked, what didn't, and learn.
The man needs help but so does our city and the citizens that Bill P "visits"... personally, I am sooo glad he is NOT on my street. And we all get our share or a little bit more.
Yes, this citizen work you are doing is valuable and is not easy.
Thanks for speaking out.

Again, net: noon 6/30
1) no police violation found
2) central intake, adult protective services, DSS, 334-5125, has been notified.
3) progress update 7/1
Julie (Guest)
Let's keep our fingers crossed. Thanks for all of your work.
And you are right -- it is because we are such a free country.
