we used to get the same thing here, 24 hours later the wind and kids had them all down. on a positive note, we havent had a streep sweeping sign go up for more than a year in our neglected neighborhood. apparently we are too clean here in Fair Haven.
i am amazed at how little people know about nature!
when you staple or nail something into a tree, it makes it vunerable to disease and pests by cutting into their protective bark. there is a very fine layer just beneath the bark that transports ALL water and nutrients from the roots of the tree to the leaves. if you cut into that fine layer, especially repeatedly, you damage the trees ability to care for itself.
Signs were stapled to Telephone poles only this past week in my neighborhood. DPW came by at 7am on Sunday in their truck driving down the street, stopping at every pole getting out stapling up the sign, getting back in the truck and driving to the next pole. Personally I think walking would have been quicker, but thats not the point.
While I can appreciate the reminder these signs provide, they are redundant and to me at least seem like a waist of time and money since ALL streets in New Haven have lots of permanent metal signs that give the street sweeping schedule. If residents displayed a little common sense, and stopped for a second to read the sign they would know when to expect the street sweeper. But I guess we can't expect everyone to be so responsible.
Has DPW ever been open to reconsidering the use of these?
I haven't been monitoring the situation that closely but the current policies (like supposedly not stapling to trees that might be harmed) seem ineffective.

but if a society is expected to be responsible, i believe that society will rise to that expectation.
if a society is coddled and expected to fail, so it goes.
i absolutely think the metal signs should be enough. hell, raise the fine to break the parking rules, and people will make a point to remember.
