Description
I just witnessed a prostitute soliciting a man visiting a neighbor across the street. This aberrant behavior is not going to be tolerated here. From now on, I will walk outside and take pictures of these incredibly ignorant women. And ignorant is the correct word here, as when the gentleman refused her "advances," she erupted into some of the most disgusting trash talk I have ever heard come out of someone's mouth. I cannot even post it here, that is how sick this prostitute was with her words.
Where is our new alderperson on this issue? I bet she considers crack whores in the hood a non-issue.

Beaver Hill.... haha. Sorry.
I put up signs on our street because prostitutes constantly came here with their Johns (actually, the Johns came here with the whores) and were littering our street with used condoms. The signs have an image of a video camera and says you are being videotaped. The problem was solved the moment I hung the signs. Make sure they are big enough and totally in your face.
I made ours, but you can buy one here, or at any of the million places that sell them:

We need to legalize and regulate prostitution just like marijuana.

What an ignorant comment by Concerned Mom. White, black, green, red, Asian, Mexican, WHO THE HECK CARES? THIS IS ABOUT PROSTITUTION, NOT RACE. The one I witnessed was black, and even her black john-to-be told her to keep walking, and he yelled at her that she was igorant, she was so foul-mouthed and disgusting.
I really feel for the Jewish families that walk these streets, as they always have. Back in the day, I bet they never thought their children would be exposed to disgusting, filthy hookers in Beaver Hill.
It's a disgrace, regardless of race. SHAME ON YOU, Conerned Mom.

Yes, Whores-be-gone, your response to concerned mom was way out of line. She was providing a description, not a judgment. I also fail to see how this affects Jewish families more than others. Do we have some sort of genetic disposition that makes prostitution more offensive to us? As you noted, this thread is about prostitution, not race (or religion, I might add). Personal attacks also contribute nothing to solving a problem.
Perhaps, as Mr. Hooker suggests, signs would help. I'm on the other side of Beaver Hill, so I don't know how much of this goes on. But if it's a major issue, come to the next management meeting and bring it up. That's what the management meetings are for.
SCF is a great tool but it requires that those that can do something about it actually participate in the process. As many have noted, I do not believe that our alder is very active on SCF, or much at all from what I've seen so far.
PS. I'm not sure if anybody has noticed, but there is an option to add images and video. Not that I'm advocating photographic vigilantism, but videos of these prostitutes might help convince our district manager. Lt. Bombalicki , last I checked, but they do keep moving them around on us and I haven't made it to a meeting in over a year.

What Wil said was ignorant. I am a white woman who frequently walks all over New Haven. I am NOT A HOOKER, I DO NOT DRESS LIKE ONE, YET I, TOO, HAVE BEEN SOLICITED. I wear my hair up in a bun, I do not wear makeup, and I am pretty covered up, yet since I am walking alone through the GHETTO, people assume I am a hooker. I have had men ask if I "was working," and I was just being friendly to one man, making conversation, only to find out he assumed I was a hooker. This was in the winter, I was all covered up with a heavy winter coat and snow boots!
As for whomever suggest contacting our alderwoman, why don't you go ahead and do that and see how far you get. We post issues here at See Click Fix all the time, but when has she ever taken note, posted in response or called for public meetings to address our concerns? She has her own agenda, that is obvious.

What time is this occurring? Where are the johns parking with them.
There may be neighbors that are not aware of this activity. Someone should write a letter and distribute it to the residents to be vigilant and confront these pigs and piglets. Take pictures and video. Call for the police to sit and write their reports at that location. Everyone assumes it's still quiet over there. That end of Norton was for the most part always quiet don't let it change. My mom owned, 383-385, the big yellow house on the corner for 23 years before we moved, I enjoy driving through and remembering my preteens into adulthood in that neighborhood. ( Not one of the greatest memories)The occasional addict would sit on the corner and smoke dope and my mother would throw water on their car, they'd leave in a big hurry after that. People think because it is quiet over there that no one is watching...Be the watcher and do something about it.

I have been reading these post and I am sad because the problem it not with prostitution anymore, it seems to be about race and education of the reader. This is why the leaders of our community do not respond or take residents of this town seriously because of this back forth negative comments toward one another. We have to stay focused on the problem at hand without offending one another. And for whatever it is worth, I graduated from Hillhouse High School, I always lived in the suburbs of Beaver Hills and I am less than a year from graduating college. So it doesn't matter what school you went to. Ignorance comes from intelligent as well non- intelligent individuals.
Thank you.

To defend oneself against accusations of streetwalking is not ignorant. It is, however, ignorant of anyone to assume that just because a woman TAKES A WALK in HER OWN HOMETOWN, on the streets of New Haven, that she MUST be a hooker.
At this point the issue needs to be addressed seriously by the NHPD, who, according to commenters here, simply could care less about the issue. The NHPD is always saying that residents need to co-police. Well, I am about to start doing that. Let this be a warning to all prostitutes - if you come down my block and solicit, I WILL make every effort to see that you are apprehended. Let THE LAW take care of you, since we obviously cannot depend on Claudette to do anything about this.
I voted last time; did you? Maybe next time we're voting in the alderperson, people will consider what has been done about the issues of CRACK WHORES in Beaver Hill.

I frequently see prostitutes walking by my house. Very annoying, and yes, finding condoms and crack bags on our lawns affects the quality of life in this neighborhood.
I like the idea of putting up signs. I also like the thought of actually taking photos and recording video. I'm not going to put up with this anymore.

Morris Cove Mom brings up a good point - are people using this site to complain? Or integrating it into police and community action?
It's one thing to post problems, but expecting to sit back and wait for police and other officials fix everything is irrational. There are only so many police in this city, and citizens far outnumber them. Step up, and step outside to help out.
J. Hart (Guest)
Edgewood, it's a combination of both. One benefit of the site is to document issues. And while I agree that it's not realistic to expect to post something and see action in every case, that is precisely what is supposed to happen in many cases. You should be able to post about a pothole or downed tree limb and expect the appropriate parties to respond. When it comes to broad, community issues like this the desired response seems a bit less clear cut. Ideally a post will get people talking and catalyze some sort of coordinated action. At the very least, I would expect our alderwoman to be reviewing and responding to issues in our ward and I'm very disappointed at her level of inaction since being voted into office.
So what is the solution in this case? I don't think that confronting crack-addled prostitutes is an effective or safe approach. I have and continue to encourage those who are experiencing these issues first-hand to come to the management meeting. Here you can speak with your neighbors and your local police district manager. If you aren't able to come, you should speak with others and organize some sort of representation at the meeting. This is a good place to catalyze action, but you are correct in that it needs to move on from there. If not, it is mere complaining.
Lastly, I've said it many times in connection with posting community issues, but unless you have a very good reason not to, please try to use your real name. We're neighbors and bound by a common interest in our community. It's tremendously productive to get to know one another. It also make us far more civil to one another.
Meetings, what meetings? (Guest)
1. Use our real names, why don't we include our home addresses as well, that way we can be targeted by those who don't like what we're fighting for!
2. CLAUDETTE DOES NOT CARE. Obama got elected, now anyone and everyone thinks they would make a good "representative."
3. Management meetings? When do these take place? If these were publicized, more people would show. I suspect that whoever is running these meetings doesn't really want large amounts of people showing up, cos then they might actually have to do something about the many, many issues plaguing New Haven's neighborhoods.
I don't know when or where these meetings occur, so why don't you share times, dates and places with us.
J. Hart (Guest)
Worried about the throngs of web-enabled, enraged prostitutes and pimps hunting you down due to your opposition to open prostitution? Sorry, that sounds an awful lot like an excuse to continue launching attacks on other from behind an anonymous account. That or clinical paranoia. Aside from which, if you're actually interested in coming to a management meeting, wouldn't you be similarly exposing yourself to reprisal attacks from street walkers? Or would you wear a mask? Would you contribute in a calm and respectful manner, or just shoot down suggestions and continue to vent your frustrations?
As for Claudette, I don't know whether or not she cares. She may well. But she is certainly ineffective.
If that's the case, so much more a reason to get involved rather than sniping at people from behind a keyboard. So next election, help campaign for someone you like. If there's nobody you like, run yourself. Either way, vote. We had less than 500 votes cast in the last aldermanic election from what I remember.
As for the management team, management meetings are staffed by residents like you and I. People who live in the district and want to address issues. It's not a political club or some secret cabal. You can "suspect" all you want,or you can come to a meeting and find out. Though it is much easier to assume that everybody is corrupt and evil, so why bother trying.
Members of the management team are taking time out of their lives to work on community issues. Why would they not want to solve issues or have people show up? Have you ever actually made an effort to find out where the meetings are? Here, let me Google that for you...

Meetings are held every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Whalley Ave. police sub station. Same time and place for as long as I can remember. Once you've been to one, you will receive emails for every meeting. Here's a link on the City's web site about how to attend these very secretive, very elite meetings.
http://www.cityofnewhaven.com/police/Districts/beaverhill.asp
How would you suggest they be publicized? Frankly, this thread is going nowhere. It seems to by your thread, and you seem far more interested in being enraged and taking shots at people than solving anything.

Anonymous, while I agree that the thread is not productive, I don't think that it is intentionally politicized. Most people I speak to have been unimpressed with Claudette's work to date, and it's perfectly normal to express frustration with the person who is supposed to be your conduit to the city government.
As for alders being "volunteers," they do get paid a small stipend. But that's not really the point. Being a volunteer doesn't excuse you from doing your job. If you're not prepared, able, or willing to do your job, don't "volunteer" in the first place. And the BOA has a tremendous influence on how the city is run, if they do their jobs. I'm not about to excuse any alder from taking the job in anything other than the most serious manner.
OK, I'm abandoning this tread for all but entertainment value. Let's get some more overcapitalized rants!

The meetings - exactly what I was was indirectly getting at . I don't know about everyone else, but my neighbors and I receive fliers about the community meetings at 7PM every 3rd TUESDAY at the WHALLEY police substation (caps for anyone who missed it the first time). I've heard they can be helpful - especially if people go.
As for anonymity, it's a safety (not social) issue for for multiple reasons. Aforementioned neighbors and I are acquainted and share information.
I agree that this thread has become unproductive. Race and politics are pointless in the discussion unless someone has spotted Mr. DeStefano working a corner. No, the rumors on Craigslist are likely not true. ;)

Just like a politician - it's all about the campaign. Once elected, you hardly ever see them doing anything.
We've both been here on Norton for decades, and it is so sad to see our neighborhood go downhill. It really all began in the early days of crack, late 80's to early 90's. That's when break-ins began, and longtime residents began to move out of New Haven because of fear. It has declined steadily since.
I recall my aunt from Queens, NY coming here to visit us. She always loved to walk up Norton Parkway because the properties were so beautiful - kept well, landscaped well, etc. She died 25 years ago, but if she were alive today to see what our neighborhood has become, she would be horrified. Now, as more and more people move out of the neighborhood, mostly out of fear and disgust, the new homeowners do little to nothing to keep up their properties. Some of them don't even mow their lawns. What was once an actual destination for out-of-towners is now a disgrace.
And now, we have to deal with prostitutes soliciting on the streets? I'm so saddened by all of this.

While I was walking down Norton today on my way to Walgreens I saw a used condom in front of someone's house, just touching their lawn. Disgusting. I would have picked it up and thrown it away, but I was not wearing any disposable gloves.
How brazen that this issue persists despite the substation a block away. This says so much about the ineffective NHPD! They should at least be using john decoys.

Has any progress been made on this issue? If the neighborhood's properties are littered with used condoms or signs of drug use on a regular basis, it is definitely going to be depressing property values in this area. Homebuyers have many more options these days than they did a few years ago, and many of them will be avoiding areas with trash or other signs of urban blight.
If these issues are a threat to property values in the entire neighborhood, which it sounds like they are, neighbors might start by trying to organize home owners on some of the surrounding blocks, like Ellsworth and Colony.
