Description
There's a drainage area being built on the corner here, right now it's a few feet deep and dirt. My son and I were playing in it today with his trucks and he stepped into a pile of leaves and disappeared into a drainage pipe. I had to put my arm up to my shoulder in the pipe and was able to grab him and pull him out. I've never been so scared in my life. I had the firemen across the street stick some cones in the drainage pipes, all of which were hidden by leaves.
This is a serious danger to any kids in the area and even smaller dogs. They need proper caps on the drainage pipes like the finished ones on the other side of the park or something.

I am Chris DiCapua of the PSCA Board and the VP of the Columbus Square Advisory Council. I called and spoke with Joanne Dahme of the PWD, who is heading this project. She will address this hazard immediately.

Thanks so much Chris! Let's hope PWD does something soon to prevent it from happening to someone else. My 2-yr old son doesnt seem too phased by it, but i'm still shaken up.

Glad your son is fine.

Wow H Padugan, this issue was addressed immediately by caring and active members of the community. I hope you enjoy your new location, your negativity is not missed in our neighborhood!

Elizabeth, my sentiments exactly. I flagged H.Padugan's comment and I suggest you do the same. We're all here trying to improve a community we love.

Seriously, you were playing with your child on a construction site. That's kind of inherently dangerous, don't you think?
It's not like he wandered off and found trouble---you encouraged him to play where it isn't safe!

Besides posting here, my wife posted on her mommy Facebook page and someone from PGW emailed her that they were on top of it, and they were. As of this past weekend, the area was cleared out with the plants planted and orange cones in each of the holes as well as tape cordoning off the area. I'm satisfied with what they did to fix it and I'm glad seeclickfix.com was able to make that happen so quickly.

ChrissMari, I appreciate your comment and there were probably many who were tempted to comment with the sentiments you expressed. Whether that is the case or not, I think we should try to keep this site focused on its intent of identifying and rectifying dangerous, dirty and disruptive situations in the neighborhood.

Personal responsibility is a community issue that leads to dangerous, dirty, and disruptive situations. I think it's germane to the improvement of the neighborhood as a whole.
Dan Pohlig
I don't disagree but in this case, a person's error in judgment led to an admittedly dangerous situation being discovered. She reported it here so that it could be taken care of likely aware that many would feel the way you feel and some might comment about that. It was responded to quickly by people who, rather than point out the error in judgment, fixed the dangerous situation and it has since been rectified (at least judging by the warning tape and barriers that have now been placed around that site). I imagine we've all taken a valuable lesson from the incident and the matter is resolved. I just think your comment about personal responsibility wasn't as germane to this particular situation as it is in many of the other issues (illegal dumping, litter, excessive noise, failure to pick up other litter left by others) that we attempt to fix on this site.

Also... change "she" to "he."

So, ChrissMari, is your point that this shouldn't have been reported, or do you imagine that you are actually improving the neighborhood by your backseat parenting?
