Description
The signal timing here results in cars making fast left turns into pedestrians, despite signage urging them to yield, as well as cars blocking the box, making ped crossing dangerous. Could the city look into better ways to adjust signals here, or ask massdot to do so if they are the responsible party?

MassDOT will be reconstructing this roadway in the near future. The revised design includes significant improvements for pedestrians and cyclists that will make the road safer and more comfortable for all users.

Thanks for the information. It appears 25% design was submitted back in 2007, and the intersection itself seems tied to the Green Line Extension, which is years away leaving us with a dangerous situation. There are immediate improvements which could be made right now. I would still request that Cambridge work with MassDOT and the State Troopers to immediately add a leading interval to the ped signal and have some targeted enforcement on blocking the box, just as they to do make sure cars and enter and exit the Museum of Science garage. The two biggest issues here:
1) Cars turning left onto O'Brien Highway from Museum Way tend to be going through the intersection even before pedestrians going from north to south can reach the south side. Yield rates are abysmal.
2) Cars block the box, impeding access for pedestrians across the intersection. What's worse, they sometimes start moving again even as peds are trying to cross when their own signal goes on.
Again, this reconstruction is years away, but there are safety improvements that MassDOT could do tomorrow, if they want to, but the city may need to prompt them to make it happen.
