  This is also dangerous for seniors and those with disabilities. The problem keeps getting worse and there isn't any enforcement taking place. Very scary and intimidating.

  Those mats, frequently found on the sidewalk at intersections, with molded rubber cones, make skateboarding no fun at all. Maybe a few at strategic places in the middle of a block?

  Thank you for your request to improve the safety and efficiency of Alameda’s transportation system.
  
  Requests for many transportation issues, including stop signs, curb painting, and traffic calming measures, typically require 8-12 weeks to complete before staff can develop a recommendation. These requests involve review of current plans and policies, compilation of accident and/or other history, coordinating with Alameda Police and other stakeholders, outreach to residents or others who may be affected by the proposed change, on-site data collection and analysis, and sometimes consultation with outside experts.
  
  We will follow up with you about your request when your request is at the top of the queue. Unfortunately, due to limited funding, there is a backlog of these requests and they are being handled in the order of receipt. Due to that backlog, some requests may take six months to a year to complete the analysis and recommendation.

  We recently repainted the "NO BIKES OR SKATES" markings on the sidewalk. They are located on every corner in the commercial district, and should be sufficient for the communication of prohibitions. We don't recommend installing additional signs or markings as we do not want to proliferate the environment. However, we do recommend education/enforcement, and are reassigning this case to the Police Department.

  The bumpy mats at the corners are used to communicate to the visually impaired that they are about to cross a street. We cannot use them to address this concern.

  Status? Other cities do not allow bicyclists and skateboarders on the sidewalk in business districts. Why does Alameda? Stenciling the sidewalk without enforcement is like putting up parking meters and then never issuing tickets. The situation has created a hostile environment for elders and the disabled. Why no enforcement? Who is responsible of that decision?
