Description
Crossing Connecticut Ave NW at M St NW as a pedestrian, the pedestrian signal indicates "Walk" before traffic on Connecticut Ave is stopped (the light turns red approximately 3 seconds after the pedestrian signal turns to "Walk"). This results in near misses for unfamiliar and/or over zealous pedestrians very frequently. On the morning of 4/2/2010 I witnessed a car coming within inches of impacting a pedestrian head on at this intersection.

2 blocks south of there, I witnessed a pedestrian stepping off the curb just after the light turned red to be hit by a right turn lane turning white van and dragged 2 blocks. The driver was arrested but the woman died. This was 2 years ago.

That is tragic, and it just echoes the fact that we will have to be hypervigilant in the area until such time as things like this are fixed -- in other cities (even ones with generally poor pedestrian infrastructure) there is typically a delay of two or more seconds between the red light and the walk signal, but apparently we don't need the extra layer of safety here...hope this gets fixed before another pedestrian gets hurt

I was coming from Julia's Empanadas at lunch, and the walk sign turned to "WALK". I stepped out into the crosswalk and a tourist bus nearly ran me down. I looked at the traffic light and he had a GREEN LIGHT!! This could have cost me my life, literally. Please fix the timing of these signals!!!

It has been YEARS since this issue was opened, and it hasn't been fixed. Appalling.
