Description
Riding a bike over east-bound just over the Shellmound St bridge to 40th is INSANELY dangerous due to the completely unnecessary in-out driveway at the Target-Panera parking lot. THAT DRIVEWAY SHOULDN'T EXIST. IT DOESN'T ADD MUCH VALUE TO CARS WHICH ALREADY HAVE OTHER MAJOR ENTRANCES AND EXITS TO THAT PARKING LOT (I use them in my car, btw). But THE ADDED DANGER FOR BICYCLISTS IS EXTREME. CARS PASS YOU GOING DOWN THE HILL THEN CUT IN FRONT OF YOU TO MAKE A HARD RIGHT TURN INTO THIS COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY ENTRANCE/EXIT, AND AT THE SAME TIME CARS EXITING THAT UNNECESSARY DRIVEWAY CUT IN FRONT OF YOU. IT'S DAMN SCARY AND IT'S TOO BURDENSOME FOR DRIVERS TO JUDGE PROPERLY; SO NOW I WILL EITHER RIDE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD AGAINST TRAFFIC OR STOP ON THE HILL AND HOPE FOR BREAK IN TRAFFIC. ELIMINATE THIS COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY ENTRANCE/EXIT NOW OR START RACKING UP HUGE LEGAL BILLS FROM VICTIMS GETTING HIT.

The new bike/walk bridge over the train tracks is likely to open within a month or less, and will definitely be my go-to route between Horton and Shellmound from then on.
Emeryville also won a state grant to convert 40th Street to a 2-way protected bikeway on the north side of the street between Adeline and Ikea, avoiding that Target driveway altogether. It will likely be quite a few years remaining for that project planning, design, and construction though.
