It's the City's responsibility to figure out where they should "be pushed" to or provide a place to "push them onto" That's why they get the big bucks.
Or, I don't know, instead of pushing, enable them to be part of the solution; why can't the city pay an hourly wage to those who help with cleanup, use it as a chance to offer services and gain a work history that can lead to additional jobs, higher pay, etc.? Whatever programs the city is already subsidizing, it's not enough. What's happening now looks like a state of emergency, and ought to be funded as such.
Yes ! !..excellent suggestions...ones that need to reach City ears...yes...there are folks in tents who can be hired / paid in some way....to clean up these dropped off messes...now this is a real solution...one that solves several needs at once...it will require supervision of course...but putting this into place..will be a far greater purpose for all that million dollars that gets spent on ...for example...turning Telegraph Ave into something looking more like a miniature golf course...while real issues ..yes..real issues...like cleaning up the dumped messes...and repairing potholes / sidewalks...in other words...stuff that actually matters...is BEGGING..for necessary and immediate remedy.
Tao, I agree. Telegraph is not only a total waste of money but is also dangerous for cars making any turns. Moreover, it's also very dangerous because it's difficult to see pedestrians and bikes obscured by the parked cars in the middle of the street.
The PW department would not like the idea of hiring those people because it will take work and OT pay from them.
The Telegraph is a traffic calming concept from Copenhagen. Being America isn't and excuse for car drivers treating Telegraph Avenue like a Freeway.
With the homeless, they need to be offered shelter and be off crack. Oakland needs to bill Red States that keep sending their crack heads to California via Greyhound. If they don't take the social services, they need to be evicted out of California.
This is NOT Copenhagen !..there's absolutely no comparison...after 15 years in the area...it was calm...now we have a miniature golf range game playing schematic...and a back -up of traffic congestion...like on a busy freeway artery....Emergency vehicles scrambling for space / busses / shuttles/ delivery trucks /postal vehicles / etc etc....and oh...oh yes...some cars.
Thanks Jim...it would be great if you can also send your Telegraph Ave comments to the "Complete (??) Streets "bunch in the City Planning Dept....yes it's very over the top...out of control...and now even the traffic signals at 29th / Telegraph are utterly out of sync...blinking in and out..off and on every 10 seconds...the whole thing is absolutely idiotic....I see your point about the excuses that would be made against hiring the street dwellers for cleaning up...all kinds of nonsense and a ridiculous barrage of "what if this and what if that" blah blah..doing things simply and uncomplicated is becoming like a hunt for lost art treasures....and very unnecessarily so.
Tao, from other people and merchants that I talked to they have more legitimate concerns. 1) If someone tries to parallel park, sometimes they can not because cars are right behind and can not back into the parking space. If they were able to park, the whole lane and traffic comes to a stop waiting for a car to park. 2) Streets that are perpendicular to Telegraph can not make a right turn on Red, again backs-up traffic. 3) The "Brown" area at the end of the block that looks a sandbox on a golf course, people illegally park there. It cause a dangerous situation because vehicles making right turns can not see pedestrians and bikes. 4) Emergency vehicles can not pass because when parking lanes and traffic lanes are full on both sides, sometimes the middle zone is also blocked by large delivery trucks.
Yes Jim..as you have expressed so accurately...Merchants and others also have even many more legitimate concerns about this debacle boondoggle on Telegraph...and precisely for the reasons you have stated here....yes...and this disaster was funded ! .Haha!...yes 4.5 million to screw up Telegraph Ave. Doesn't this truly qualify as a prime example of "voodo economics"...spending...or rather WASTING money on idiotic street decorations...while the real problems of our city streets :trash /potholes /traffic signals that are not working /street lights that stay off...even after having been reported on 2 years ago / no place for homeless to go / trash cans overflowing on corners /rough rugged streets needing new surfaces / sidewalks broken up all around....but no...instead..a big bow is tied around dumb wasteful projects like Telegraph...and the pretending and pretense continues...
