Agree, Taryn. As a pedestrian, I am frustrated when I have to move out of the way of bicyclists riding on the sidewalks. I am also upset when cyclists fail to stop at stop signs or red lights or ride without wearing a helmet. These issues need to be addressed. But, as a cyclist, I would also like to raise awareness re safety issues that cyclists face every day. I ride around the Drive and along Bellevue and Coggeshall Avenues and it is open season on cyclists. People stepping on the shoulder of the road without checking for cyclists; drivers going through stop signs, ignoring the fact that the cylclist was at the stop sign first and has the right of way; segways, scoot cars and regular cars all ride or park on the shoulder of the road, forcing cyclists into the road and traffic. The worst offenders are the tour buses, which travel at about 5 mph, spewing fumes, taking up the entire road, making the shoulder impassable and forcing cyclists into oncoming traffic to get around them. Drivers of any wheeled vehicle need to be aware of and respectful of cyclists. Pedestrians need to be aware, as well. I am an experienced cyclist who can usually handle these situations but plenty of people are not experienced. One day, a cyclist, experienced or not, is going to be seriously injured or killed.
