Most traffic lights use either an electromagnetic wire loop in the pavement that detects metal to trigger the green (you can often see the cuts in the pavement where the loop is, and position your bike over them), or video camera detection. Either way if you position yourself in the middle of the lane and behind (not in) the crosswalk you should be detected. Often cities will paint a little bike stencil on the pavement to let you know where to wait, which is what I'm asking for at this location. If you are in the right spot and still don't get a green light after two minutes of waiting then report the issue to the city so they can fix it.

Hmmm I learn something new every day. A stencil guiding bike riders to wait in the proper spot would be a good thing.

Had no idea about the little bike stencil markings. That is super helpful info! What I have found is also helpful for 'triggering' video camera detection is slowly approaching the light while riding in an 'S' shaped trajectory. Seems to often work better than just approaching in a straight line.

Alicia, you shouldn't need to weave or approach slowly in order for the camera to detect you on your bike. If that happens please consider the signal detection to be broken and report it to the city, as bike riders shouldn't have to know and use special tricks in order to get a green light. Thanks!
