Description

A school-zone speed-limit sign was put on my property (2137 Mt. Vernon Rd.) on Friday, August 19, 2016. It makes no sense, for several reasons:
1. It’s in the wrong place. The sign is about 50 yards past the intersection at Stratham heading East on Mt. Vernon Rd. That’s the intersection where the kids cross. The same one where you put a flashing crosswalk about 6 months ago (at Mt. Vernon Rd. & Stratham). Why install a reduced-speed sign after cars have passed the intersection? Makes no sense.

If anything, it should be 50-100 yards before that intersection. But wait, there’s already an electronic speed detection device about 50 yards before the intersection. So why put a sign after the intersection…and only 100 yards past an expensive electronic sign? Makes no sense.

2. Continuing East from the new sign, there’s another street (Meadowlake) in about 100 yards, but there’s no cross street there—and no sidewalk for a half mile on either side of Meadowlake. So there’s no foot traffic and no kids crossing at Meadowlake. So why put up a sign there? Makes no sense.

3. There is a yellow pictorial school zone sign on the other side of Mt. Vernon, visible to Westbound traffic as it approaches the Stratham intersection--where kids from the Forest Springs neighborhoods cross Mt. Vernon to get to the schools. In my view, it’d be better to replace the pictorial sign (which everyone ignores anyway) with the new speed-limit sign. Put the sign across the street and remove the yellow pictorial sign. That makes sense.

4. The new sign also makes no sense because it blocks the view of the street from my driveway when we try to pull onto Mt. Vernon Rd. There’s only about 100 yards visibility to the top of the hill anyway. Now there’s a street sign that partially blocks that view. This is a dangerous situation that you just created. Makes no sense.
I assume the new sign is intended to prevent an accident. But you’ve dramatically increased the chances of that happening—right at my driveway. Maybe not with school kids, but, hey: Adult lives matter too.
5. And, just as we can’t see oncoming traffic, this sign also hinders the County’s view of trash and recycling items on collection days.
6. Finally, why are Dunwoody taxpayers paying for an unnecessary and badly-placed sign? If, for some reason that I can’t fathom, Dunwoody needs another sign, at least put it in a smarter, safer place.
Please move this sign. There are lots of options that do make sense.
