Description

The whole of the New Haven Green looks like this, except on all the other benches people are passed out or lounging among the filth. This is disgraceful misuse and monopolization of this public space.

I can't believe someone posted this today -- because I was planning on it! I had a morning meeting and walked across the upper green diagonally from the lower Green and I could not believe the amount of trash strewn all about... along with the people passed out on benches and under trees, and the morning ritual of someone being carted away in an ambulance (which I see on a regular basis at that spot on my morning walk to work)... I was disgusted and saddened. The grounds are not mowed as well as the lower Green either, perhaps they mow around the debris... it's a shame, such a beautiful spot for locals, students and visitors to enjoy... in such a bad state.

The Green, in particular the Upper Green has most definitely fallen into disrepair and it's obvious that city services or organizations that deal with addiction or homelessness should direct some outreach here. People are in need and should be helped; we have a multitude of social service and nonprofits in our city that supposedly address these issues, where are they??? If the city has departments that specifically deal with this, i.e. CSA, maybe they could direct some staff here or start monitoring this site for issues such as this!

It is a disgrace. Other communities across the country also have a problem of homelessness, and people with economic, mental, or substance abuse problems, but they manage to keep their public spaces in decent shape.

It is a problem. Social services such as rehab, addiction counseling, job counseling, etc have been offered to these people, but they refuse the help. Which they have the right to do. You can't force someone to get help if they don't want it. You can, however, stop giving the panhandlers money. It doesn't help, it fosters dependence. It should be illegal to panhandle.

City of New Haven if you can't clean this up by next week it shows you really don't care. We the taxpayer deserve it. The Green can be one of nicest in county.

Walked through the Upper Green this morning on way to work and it was NOTICEABLY cleaner, so maybe the message is getting through...

I agree with both of Nadine's comments... this morning it was cleaner... AND I saw a parks worker near the corner of college and chapel. Glad to see that it has been addressed!!! Hope it continues to be maintained... and the underlying issues are addressed in some manner...

Just passed through the Green near noon on a Tuesday and there's the passed out guy on the first bench with trash surrounding him/it and just past the churches, looking toward the intersection of Chapel and College, a good sprinkling of trash permeating the Green. Whatever Parks Maintenance is doing isn't fully implemented or it's not working.

They have just as much a right to be there as you do.

New Haven has a large population of poor and homeless folks.

It is what it is. We can't brush aside the poor and make public spaces only available to the privileged classes.

That said, the city could do a better job of cleaning all the litter...

The green in the area by the bus stop is disgusting. Covered in litter EVERYWHERE. Why do people have no pride in their city? Why is it allowed to be like this????
