As a longtime Forest Rd. resident, I must reluctantly agree with Not Yet. If you're at Willard, you're not that far from Fountain. That is the place to cross safely with children, and where drivers will (one hopes) be more likely to look for pedestrians.

I understand. but, that is not what is going on on the ground. the point should be to over engineer not under engineer the problem. If safety is the concern, there should be a cross walk

Agreed that a standard crosswalk with zero other engineering would still be unsafe, but less so than it currently is. It is currently a LEGAL pedestrian crossing, even if it's unmarked. There's just no reasonable way to expect a family with three kids to walk all the way down to Fountain Street (let alone Edgewood - there's no sidewalk on the west side of Forest Rd all the way to Edgewood anyway) from Willard just to cross. This would be a great location for a pedestrian-activated crosswalk, ideally with blinking lights. See photo below. Yes, it costs money, but improved walkability here would also raise property values in this section of the neighborhood. Whatever is done should be part of a broader approach to slow traffic on Forest Road so we don't have any more tragic, avoidable deaths like the one two months ago near West Elm. How many deaths will need to happen before the City and State have a collective wake-up call to address this street properly?.

TT&P, is there a broader plan to calm traffic and turn Forest Road into a Complete Street as per CIty and State law? There has been some work going on further south on Forest to address drainage issues, but unclear whether there will be any accomodations made to slow traffic and/or improve conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists. While Forest Road is an important arterial, it is also a densely populated residential street between West Elm and Fountain.

Forest Rd is maintained by ConnDOT, therefore, a request for a crosswalk needs to be submitted to them. This issue is being reclassified to the Other category. If you are interested in finding out whether there is a Complete Streets project, please contact the Engineering Department. Thank you.
