Description
there is extremely large tree directly in front of 616 Green Street with roots that have buckled the sidewalk by several feet making access difficult. more importantly if this tree comes down in a storm it would devastate neighboring houses. this tree by far the largest one on this street and is long overdue to be removed and be replanted with a more appropriate sized tree

The tree is over 100 feet high, so there is no a neighbor can prune and care for it. Also it is a city tree, on a city sidewalk, not owned by any individual neighbor.
I agree with the general sentiment of taking car of and the benefit of our trees. However this particular tree does make the sidewalk impassible for handicapped, children on bikes, etc. There is ledge in this area which tends to stop and kill tree roots when they grow to a certain depth. If this tree came down in any direction it would cause catastrophic damage. It has already taken out the power lines on several occasions in the past.

yes - I mis-spoke - the tree is a city tree, but the abutting owner has been an excellent advocate for the tree for decades, working with the city collaboratively and effectively. There is a new citizens advocacy committee for trees just forming in cambridge - I would like to invite you to the next meeting. tuesday aug 9 at 6pm - Eastern bank, harvard square. Here is a link from the greencambridge.org calendar
