Thanks for your report. The traffic signal that was here prior to the Main Street reconstruction was replaced with a raised crosswalk to increase pedestrian visibility and curb extensions to shorten the crossing distance. The signal was removed due to extremely low pedestrian compliance-observational studies noted that 92% of pedestrians crossed the street against the green light, creating a dangerous environment for all users. Given the high volume of pedestrians using this crosswalk, the low volume/speed of vehicles, and the improved pedestrian infrastructure, we determined that an unsignalized crossing is best for the operation of this mid-block crosswalk.
