Well the hope is to improve bike infrastructure and not continue relying on ad hoc solutions. For bikes to become more and more recognized as a form of transportation as legitimate as cars, there needs to be the infrastructure that gives cyclists the resources as much as the responsibilities of a driver. Just as we don't park our cars on someones front lawn just because we could, there should be places to lock bikes that are designated and don't get in other people's way.

I'm all for bike infrastructure, but this city should put more money into the inner city, as opposed to making the cycling community (which is largely the privileged class) more comfortable.
An easy DIY solution is locking your front wheel to the downtube. No one can ride off on a bike locked in this manner.

Locking a wheel to the frame doesn't keep someone from carrying your bike off in a car or truck and cutting the lock later at their leisure. Residential neighborhoods all over need more bike racks; too often, there are no parking meters and no secure places to lock a bicycle. Street signs are often just planted in the dirt and are easily pulled up.

You are right that some areas need attention that they are not getting but wrong that bikes are a vehicle for the 'privileged class'.

Having been a cyclist in this city for 25 years, I can tell you that most of these "cycling activists" are indeed of the privileged class.
And most of what they advocate for are quality of life improvements for the wealthier parts of town.

As for a bike being carried off? A cheap u lock can be popped even more quickly.

And, btw folks... don't leave your bikes outside overnight... even locked.
