The access to the beach at 88th Street was created for an access point for public safety vehicles and Town of Surfside vehicles to enter the hard-pack and beach areas in the southern end of the town. This access point was necessary as the previous access point was at 87th Terrace and it has been permanently closed due to the construction of a private condominium in Miami Beach.
The Surfside Police Department checks this area frequently but cannot assign personnel there on a full-time basis. When violators are observed they are either warned or a citation is issued depending on the circumstances.
The Town of Surfside Administration is evaluating alternative configurations for this beach access point. If these violations are observed by the public in the future it is best to immediately contact the Surfside Police Department non-emergency number at 305-861-4862, so an officer may be dispatched at the time of occurrence. The See Click Fix system is not monitored continuously, but the non-emergency number for the Surfside Police Department is monitored at all times. We appreciate your concern for the safety and quality of life of all in the Town of Surfside.
A new configuration is needed ASAP. A couple of aluminum signs are not going to deter anyone from going all the way to the beach to drop off and pick-up passengers and cargo. It would be absurd to have the police monitoring that spot 24/7. This issue must be resolved before there is an accident or worse; particularly tonight with the 4th of July fireworks.
The Town of Surfside Public Works Department has installed poles to mitigate the issue of vehicles entering the beach area via 88th Street. The initial evaluation of the barriers are that they have been effective. The Surfside Police Department Patrol Unit conducts daily checks on all shifts of the beach area for vehicles and other violations of law and ordinances.
We appreciate your concern for the safety of all in the Town of Surfside.
