I would suggest to have each lane/direction of traffic given their own dedicated signal time. That would mean you don't need to add any new left turn signals, you just need to reprogram the signals. Since we are talking about this intersection, I'd also vote to put up signs to prevent people making Winthrop St SB into 2 lanes at the intersection. The street isn't wide enough and it just ends up slowing things down and is dangerous when cars zip around to the right to get around left turn cars

The hardware store is very busy in the am with contractors etc getting supplies. Removing the 1 way sts would just shift the traffic thru the hillside neighborhood, which the residents probably wouldn't be happy about.

I reported this same intersection for a violation of placement of pedestrian walk signal buttons. they need to fix them so they are within 10 feet of the crosswalk (to bring them up to code). SO, while they are working on moving the housings for those, they could fix the signal timing too. This intersection has awful traffic issues that could be aided by some changes.

So somebody not being happy is what it is all about! The Parkway use to be two lanes in both directions - the one way street use to be two ways - now all the traffic is backed up on Boston Ave!
How did we get to this situation? I am guessing someone was not happy!

Its not about "someone being unhappy ", its about trying to improve a situation that affects many people. I can usually avoid the backups due to my work schedule

Maybe the timing in the morning would have to be different, but it seems pretty universal that in the afternoon the westbound trickle of traffic on Boston Ave. is enough to prevent eastbound traffic from turning left onto Winthrop St. It is pretty typical for only a couple of cars to make it through the intersection per light cycle. If nothing can be done to reallocate parking/loading zones to accommodate a left turn lane, then a left turn arrow on Boston Ave. eastbound at the start of the light cycle would go a long way to clearing out the backups. I rarely see such backups traveling westbound on Boston Ave. (again, mornings may be different), so they should have to wait for some left turns to clear at the start of every light cycle.

Does anyone know if anyone from the city actually sees these? This is a waste if not. The problem has obviously gotten worse since school is back on . Would be nice if there was an actual response from the traffic department.
