Description

The asphalt on 42St. Oakland, above all from Broadway Ave. to Telegraph Ave is in terrible conditions. I bike daily this street and if I accidentally hit the many potholes/cracks in the asphalt I could easily fall, damage my bicycle or part of it, and injure myself. 1 month ago, I hit one of those potholes during low visibility at night and my front bike light flew on the floor and broke. $60 lost for me! This asphalt conditions are unworthy a developed country, let alone the most powerful economy in the world!

The City of Oakland Public Works Department has received this issue. It is registered as service request #656665. Thank you, in advance, for your patience as we work through a backlog of pothole service requests. Unfortunately the City does not have enough funding to repave all streets in poor condition. With limited funding, our response to resurfacing requests is limited to minor pavement and pothole repairs only. Our Street Maintenance Department will assess your street and determine whether temporary measures might be appropriate. Please understand that this work may be limited to pothole or other minor repairs, and that we have many similar requests. We will do our best to respond in a timely manner. The backlog of streets in Oakland needing pavement currently is $435 million and growing.

I regularly walk this corridor and agree that the potholes are very dangerous for bikers and pedestrians. I had a fall when I was pushing a stroller across the street a few months ago. Please upgrade the severity of this issue as it is a current, constant safety risk in a very high traffic area for cars, bikes and pedestrians.

Thanks for the report. Due to the danger to cyclists, this issue is being submitted to Oakland as a "TOP 10" for immediate attention under an agreement with the Bike East Bay Hazard Elimination program. While the report cites a single location, let's hope PW can patch more than just the one at 389 42nd Street.
