I've never seen the gentleman who panhandles at this corner getting in the way of traffic either entering or existing Rindge Avenue. When the traffic begins to move he always moves back to the traffic island. There is a problem at this intersection but it is not him. The problem is cars going over the sidewalk and crashing into the fence. The sidewalk is heavily used by pedestrians and it has been pure chance that people haven't been hit. I believe last November's crash is at least the second time in the last couple of years that this has happened. Where are the cars coming from? Illegal left turns off Alewife Brook Parkway?
He's out again now. This is definitely a safety issue; a car turning right off Alewife Brook Parkway could easily hit him in the middle of the road, or a car could get him as he moves between lanes amidst stopped cars. I just saw a car in the left turn lane on Rindge nearly hit him as he was looking down counting his money. Hopefully he can be directed to social services dispensed in a safer forum.
