Description

In East Rock Park today found trash in every location that a car can reach. (On the back entrance to the top of East Rock, off of English drive east of Orange, the road that's always closed to vehicles, there was no litter.) It appears that, as long as people with cars are allowed to drive into the park, filth fill follow.
What's difficult to understand is this: People obviously enjoy the park and visit it because it's such a lovely public resource. So why would anybody expressing that sentiment by their visiting leave in such a beautiful place fast food, cigar and cigarette packages, used wadded-up diapers, liquor bottles, and every other miscellaneous piece of garbage that might accumulate in a car?
Is it ignorance? Stupidity? Meanness?
Today I collected three bulging bags; two days ago another bulging bag full was plucked from the ground.
I'm always on the lookout for receipts with names. Along with some KFC trash I found a Capital One bill for one Segundo (last name and address withheld) of New Haven, who lives on a small dead-end street (I just looked at his house on Google Maps) not too far from East Rock.
So Segundo and all of you other thoughtless trashers out there, I'm picking up after you, but also watching in hope that you reconsider your trashy behavior and enjoy the park without leaving behind evidence of your visit.
