Description

Last year's hurricane Irene took our Norway Maple tree down. Parks dept. was to replace the tree with a new one. After a year we inquired and were told they would not put in another tree. We wish an inspection be made and the tree to be replaced along with another on the opposite side of the driveway. The entire canopy on East 19th St. has now a big, gaping hole due to the loss of three separate trees.

As the tree has not been replaced, nor the tree on the other side of the neighbor's driveway, nor the tree directly across the street, the entire section of the street has been opened up to the eastern exposure sun, creating greater heat and less potential for keeping the air scrubbed of pollutants. We urge the city to reconsider and plant a replacement tree.

To request a new tree from the City of New York, call 311 or follow this link to apply online: http://www.nycgovparks.org/trees/street-tree-planting/request. NOTE: The NYC Parks Department is unable to plant trees where there are infrastructure conflicts such as signage, traffic signals, hydrants, etc. located within 30 feet. If your tree request was previously denied, this is likely the reason.

I hear all the time about "One Million Trees" being planted in the city. There is a spot here in Midwood Park that lost 3 large trees and none have been replaced. These trees created shade, cleaned the air, and filled the canopy over our street - East 19th Street. Why can't one or two of those million trees be planted here to replace those lost as a result of hurricanes Irene and Sandy.

Shame, shame!
