No cars there today (a weekday), but they'll be back on the weekend! And... a total absence of "No Parking" signs. ;-(

Various authorities continue to tell me that the issue will be addressed, but to date nothing has happened. Park users continue to block the bike lane, especially on weekends, rather than paying to park in the lot.

The design of this stretch of road is weak. There is room to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, parking, and the regional speedway (I'm pretty sure the speed "limit" is just a suggestion. Most cars manage 50 mph or more). But it would mean spending a lot more money. The bike route is a result of the 4th bore settlement. CalTrans has done what the settlement requires. I expect they will do no more.

Five months gone by and still no paint or signs. And the police assert (incorrectly, I believe) that they cannot ticket vehicles parked in a bike lane without a painted curb or signs. Hopefully the city will stop dragging their feet and get this fixed before someone is injured.

Upper Broadway from Brookside Ave (College Prep School) up to the Kay Overcrossing (Caldecott Field) was restriped to add a bike lane, yet none was spent installing “No Parking” signs or painting the curbs red. (Matter of fact, one old “No Parking” closest to Caldecott Field mysteriously disappeared!) According to the DMV website "You may park in a bicycle lane if your vehicle does not block a bicyclist and/or there is not a 'No Parking' sign posted." IMHO funding from the 4th bore settlement should be released to paint the curbs red & post “No Parking” signs near the lake and up near the ballpark, thus remedying “a defective condition.”

For what it's worth, the CA DMV guidance on the legality of parking in bike lanes is incorrect, or at leasti complete, based on a common misinterpretation of the vehicle code language. Blocking any type of bicycle facility is in fact illegal regardless of the curb color or signage, and drivers there can be ticketed (PDs outside of Oakland do so with no problems). The DVM needs to get its act together with regard to driver education about bike facilities, but regardless I still think red curbs and "no parking" signage are needed at this location to reinforce the existing prohibition.

"No parking" signs have been installed. Hopefully OPD will now find a way to enforce the parking restriction on weekends in the spring & summer.

Wow & about time; says a driver always concerned for the safety of cyclists! Now there’s “No Parking – Bike Lane” signs on upper Broadway on BOTH sides of the street, except the small stretch of street parking near the lake. Let’s see what happens when people return to Lake Temescal and Caldecott Field in the spring.

This might’ve been the first weekend that parents with their baseball kids played at Caldecott Field since the “No Parking – Bike Lane” signs went up, and there they were, parked in the bike lane despite the signs.

Signs have been erected along Broadway. So far this year I haven't observed any violations. But when summer arrives and parking fees are being charged at the lake, some enforcement may be required. Hopefully, OPD can find the resources for weekend enforcement.
