Description
The developer of The Corsair wants to understand the neighborhoods thoughts and concerns about potentially relocating the Mechanic Street Dog Park. Discussions are ongoing to understand if a larger dog park could occupy the Mechanic Street Arboretum and the current dog park could be returned to pedestrian use.

That smelly, trip hazard dog hole, public stench from owners leaving dog feces on the ground, and spraying urine, creates an aroma making surrounding restaurant customers sitting outside or waiting inline want to vomit! Dog park should be near the other ball fields or ice skating rink or newly mill river trail getting funded by grants.
I address this last year, 1st light on the evening flag pole honor our proud USA Old glory colors, 2nd there should be grass through the memorial park for and understand as when there are newly placed name markers assigned that the size of the bricks area allotted will grow. Third, the City should have a veterans liaison work with the VFW to petition any registered honorable discharged papers required at Town Clerks Office notify any WII families to have their family members names placed at the memorial. THE DOG PARK SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN AUTHORIZED BY THE CITY PARKS DEPARTMENT! ADDITIONALLY, all Flag Poles in all parks, greens, schools and city buildings including NEW HAVEN LAND TRUST PROPERTY SITES should have a solar powered wind turbine illuminated flag poles required by flag standards and etiquette congressional law!

NEIGHBOR,
I'm not forgiving pooh-scofflaws. And sorry but I disagree with you. A memorial park is a park, not a cemetary, and a memorial park that nobody visits doesn't serve to memorialize lost lives because effectively, a memorial unseen isn't a memorial.

I've seen my share of poop in the dog park and also used needles, old rubbers and beer cans in the Eagle St. Arboretum. It took months of urging to get the city to clean up the pile of garbage that someone had dumped at the Arboretum last year, and poop cleanup did not seem to be on their agenda for the dog park. The city mowed it once a year and occasionally threw some grass seed on it.
Turning the dog park into an open grassy area with flowers and benches--and even a memorial stone to the neighborhood's vets--is a great idea. I'm sure Mezcal and it's customers will be happy. But if there isn't constant attention to upkeep, we're only back where we started. Same with a re-located dog park on Mechanic. Who wants to live next door to dog poop?
There's no point in having any kind of park that can't be maintained on a regular basis.

Which park are you looking at? I just looked at the Mechanic triangle on Google street view (which appears to have been refreshed late winter early spring) and there's a reasonable amount of grass even prior to warm spring.

ROBN,
You are not sorry you disagree with me, and I'm not sorry I disagree with you. This is America and we can disagree. Of course a memorial park is a park.. and it's not that no one visits but it's also not a place to be rowdy and stinky with dog poop.. It's a place to remember .. memorial = remember. And it's not even that people have to crowd around and stand.. Some people lookat it from a car.. But pooping at a memorial is disrespectful,, and running around crazy and assaulting people who do want to sit there quietly is disrespectful,, and yes, a dog that comes up and sniffs you is assaulting you. Again,, a dog park should be at a special place that people don't want to use.. let it go to the dogs.

BTW thanks much for the diagram. What I meant by double gate/corral is not like a double door (two doors in plane) but two separate gates in line spaced @10' apart as part of an entrance corral or vestibule if you will. This is a standard safety put into dog park entry/exit so entering dogs don't get rushed while their owner is removing their leash and so dogs not belonging to a departing owner dhon't squeeze by the departing owner and take off. For example, Check out union street dog park and Hamden dog park on ridge road. The only reason the saint Ronan street dog park doesn't have this is because Yale (who kindly donates use of the private land) sought to minimize the amount of chain link attached to the historical cast iron fence. If you want advice about this, Robert Musco is the effective leader of the Union Street Dog Park and can share a lot of gained knowledge with you. Contact him on their FB page.

Segregation/Integration: At union street there is a separate entrance for the small dog park. There was some regret that there wasn't a connecting gate from typical do area to small dog area so that owners of small dogs in the typical area could retreat from within if they spotted lathe dogs entering.large dogs entering. This design has an internal connection trapping small dog owners.
Latches: the union street gates were getting damaged by people swinging them too far and wracking the hinges. We somewhat cured the problem by installing one way latches that we hacked with a welder. Attached is a picture of one that eventually got busted but outivedvall others by 10x. I reccomend having them swing outward so it's easier to get in after snow (one can shovel the gates path of travel before entering)

M25,
This is somewhat of a moot point now because a dog park will be created at the other end of Mechanic Street. Nevertheless, you're wrong. There's only one place that we as a society, restrict our behavior to quiet contemplation of the dead and that's called a cemetery. The triangle park is tiny, but it's still a park and people are entitled to use it, as they do all over the US. (you pretty much can't throw a rock in New England without hitting a park or town green with a war memorial in it...I'm having a hard time recalling a park without one.)
Not to belabor the point, but the park predates WWII. https://tinyurl.com/m92bmp4

....right...yuo're the most patriotic guy in the room; just factually deprived.
Theres a WW1 War Memorial Hall in New Haven called Woolsey Hall. Do you know what people do there? They eat and they have music concerts.
Theres a Rev War Memorial on the East Haven Green. Do you know what people do there? Craft and music festivals and the occaisional football game by neighborhood kids.
Theres a park in East Haven literally called "Memorial Field". Do you know what people do there? They play baseball.
Theres a Civil War Memorial on the Guilford Green. Do you know what people do there? Craft fairs, music festivals and they run their dogs.
Theres a WW1 Memorial on the New Haven Green. Do you know what people do there? Just about everything.
The list goes on and on.

Does anyone know what the planned timeline for this is?
Also, beyond the fact that the current park is exceptionally small, it's also exceptionally poorly maintained relative to other parks in the area. Owners don't seem to pick up after their dogs regularly, and the trash is often nearly overflowing. I have a dog, but I never take him here because it's much too dirty. It would be great if the community could come together to try to encourage more responsible use of the new park. The St. Ronan Park is almost always very clean and owners seem much more careful to keep it it that way.

ER,
If you'd ask those park users, you'd find that St Ronan and Union Street have the same problem but spread out so its not as noticeable. It boils down to the fact that every year, a new crop of studetns arrive who are well meaning but have never owned a dog. So there's neverending mentorship to be given to fellow park goers. And the etiquette lesson doesn't have to be confrontational. When I see someone who isn't paying attention to their dog (staring at their smart phone) I say to them, "is that your lab poohing?" or "you're dog just went" or" do you need a bag?" They always get the message and clean up. Occasionally, when I'm looking to gain some positive pooh-karma I'll walk the perimeter with a bag and pick up.

SCF - pleas close this issue . The east rock dog park has been built.
Susan there are only 50 dogs at Corsair. The triangle park was not touched at the request of neighbors.
