our Traffic Engineering staff requests different types of data to measure whether a traffic signal meets the warrants for installation based on the Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices. This data is then evaluated to see how effective or ineffective the addition of the traffic signal or new phasing would be. The data generally consists of current and not projected traffic volumes, crash data, sight distance, and turning movement data. Staff also evaluates the intersection to see if there are any other or additional measures that would improve the efficiency and safety of the intersections such as additional signage, adding lanes, and even channelization changes.

In addition to this, can a barrier be placed to keep cars in the right turn lane from Six Forks onto Rowan? Every afternoon, a number of motorist ride the turn lane until the last minute to merge with the traffic headed north on Six Forks.

This has to be one of the worst intersections in Midtown with the amount of congestion it causes during the school year.

Our traffic engineer received the results of the study, and according to the crash history and traffic volumes data, this location does not meet the criteria needed for the addition of a protected left turn. We will continue to monitor this intersection and make changes as needed. Thank you for your concern with safety and progression of traffic.
