Description
On August 21, at 5:07pm, CAT Bus 1286, Route 12 Outbound on Hillsborouugh St., drove right though a red light at Brooks Avenue. This light wasn't yellow when entering the intersection, wasn't even orange, it was full-blown Wolfpack RED. Blatantly and dangerously went right through the intersection during a very busy time of day for both traffic and pedestrians. Something needs to really be done about this. I got this one on video, and I am submitting this to the local news consumer reporters. Something finally needs to be done with the callous behavior of CAT buses leaving early, speeding, and making dangerous lane changes on Hillsborough and West Morgan St.

I agree that CAT should address this particular case.
That said, CAT drivers all have CDLs, training, and experience, and the buses all have their own cameras for monitoring. I've found CAT bus drivers to be superior to most on the road, and I remember the N&O reporting a few years ago that CAT has a good safety record (I think they measured accidents per mile).
Thus, characterizing CAT as "callous" is very unfair.

Thought a review of the video indicates there was not a technical violation of the ordinance (the vehicle was in the intersection when the light turned red) . General Manager Scott McClellan notes that this is a 16 ton bus and has a much greater stopping distance than a car. This incident will be reviewed with the driver; however.
The Traffic Engineer looked at the video and he stated that the bus’s front tires had passed the stop bar before the light turned red. If this is the case it was a legal crossing; regardless, we certainly want to limit these types of close calls and will take every effort to do so.
