I have also reported this issue a few times t bars up and down Webster and so far APD has done NOTHING. I was apparently confused that enforcing law was their job?

On another report, the Alameda Police said that they were going to increase patrols and closed the ticket. Those apparently vanish from SeeClickFix. There is still this report around.

The City of Alameda needs a plan for addressing this health issue. The City Council passed the law to protect public health and safety. Perhaps a category for reporting smoking hot spots -- essentially, all of Webster Street. Code Enforcement has an almost 1000 complaint backlog. If something isn't an immediate threat to public health in safety, it can stay on the list indefinitely for enforcement. Simply put, the system is not working and the City Manager needs to coordinate the various City departments responsible to take effective action. Ultimately, the City Council is responsible for the laws it passes.

Another four weeks and no response

Evidently the city doesn't take the smoking ordinance seriously.

No, they don't. It, like many other ordinances, exist only on the books and are rarely, if ever enforced. However, you can count on vehicles at expired meters or street sweeping parking violations being ticketed. Much of Webster Street is an ash tray. The health consequences are borne by the residents, not City officials. Which should be the higher priority for enforcement, an expired parking meter or a health hazard for our children?

Directly under the "smoke free zone" sign by the Shamrock. It is the same all along Webster Street.

I must agree that smoking outside of the Shamrock is an annoyance and all too common. The city has an ordinance against it and there's a sign within 10 or 15 feet of the building that says it's not allowed. If the city cared enough to enact an ordinance, they should at least enforce it. Otherwise, it's just a joke.

Still no movement on this issue.

I get that the police department is short handed and doesn't want to spend time ticketing people for smoking.

But when you see a cop car on the corner ignoring a group of people smoking in front of the bar you have to wonder if there's not some pay off scheme or something happening.

Yes, this problem continues. Our democratically elected local government passes laws to protect our health and safety, but without adequate enforcement, they are little more than ink on paper.
