Description
This is an embarassment and a health hazard. yesterday i took some new St Augustine's University students home after showing them some of Raleigh. They were uncomfortable when they saw the slum conditions of the State St and Jones street houses near the Tarboro rd Community Center ( where voting will take place) My house is on North State St, and already I have had people indicate they were afraid to visit us and shocked by the filth that has been left there for most of the summer. The city policy is obviously not serving the citizens, I do not care if a "housing case" has been filed, ( weeks ago now) it is horrible to be made to live near this health hazard of rats with fleas, flies, parasites, and waste. the garbage consists of household items left in the weather and food garbage, bottles cans yard waste, mattress, etc. Children live and play in and around this mess, and it stinks. Everyday people add to the garbage. Now the across the street house has put out a pile of furniture and garbage in bags, i have watched the garbage collectors and all kinds of city of raleigh public works trucks and crews pass all of this by many many times, the inspection protocol and RESPONSE needs to change, this is a travesty. I would like a tax rebate in lieu of how much de-valued my properties have become from the neighborhood conditions being a festering sore. This summer the crime on North State St. has been continuous and it is apparent that the economic real value of this are does not match the assessed basis of our tax bills. .My family has been subjected to living near this squalor long enough. Step up to the responsibility and have this cleaned up. Start enforcing what's on the streets and important instead of nit picking, Broken TVS are Toxic, Broken glass= hospital time, Rats lead to rabies, and worse. TAKE CARE OF THIS NOW! I don't want to explain to another college student who has come to NC that St AUGUSTINES is in a ghetto that nobody cares about! This junk is dragging our whole city down one neighborhood at a time.

I have referred this issue to the Housing and Environmental division. They are required by law to allow property owners a reasonable amount of time (generally 1-2 weeks) to remove a nuisance violation once identified. If they fail to do so they are assessed an additional citation, and an abatement order has to be brought to the City Council for approval. Once approved (sometimes it is appealed and additional time is granted) the City has to hire a contractor to remove the refuse and will bill the property owner and place a lien on the property for the cost. The City Council does not expend taxpayer money to clean up private properties. We offer regular garbage pickup and bulky load service, but if people do not avail themselves of this, they are issued a citation and must either remove it themselves or we will abate the problem and bill them. Our Solid Waste Services division can not afford to pick up whatever people load out onto the curb, because if they do, then the curbs throughout the City will become overwhelmed with everyone's unprepared junk. When the inspectors have taken an action here, I will update this issue.

We have a pending nuisance case here. The deadline has passed and we are currently scheduling abatement. I will ask that this one be facilitated so that it can happen ASAP.

I saw a silver Chevrolet Equinox SUV driven by a black man pulling a black trailer dump a bunch of trash here. On the back right door it had some kind of lawn service sign with a phone number, I think it was 919-791-8481 but the guy took the sign off before I could get the number right in my head.

This is a common problem. Last year after the tornado, It was a few months before I could get help hauling my debris away. I had it at the edge of the street and before it was picked up, the pile had doubled with other people dropping their trash off. Thanks, Daquan, for trying to get the number. You sound like a good neighbor.

Thank God it has finally been picked up, better late than never! I know this was not caused by the city but we need the city to help. Dog waste and garbage are a huge problem , having more trash cans with signage and consequences for not using them would be a great solution. The change in style has to be pushed hard, its not a civil rights violation to enforce clean yards and streets, it is strong motivation to share the responsibility for health! Thanks Pat and Bennie Overton for calling when nothing was getting done. It was awful to live through this summers heat with that stinking mess , the flies were outrageous! It will take a while to get over that feeling of disappointment in the city officials who let us down. Maybe some things need to change, and people need good examples, not looking the other way. hoping for less crime in a cleaner cared for place. And PROUD to have ST AUGUSTINES UNIVERSITY be our neighbor, let's make the area great!

I will pass the number on to Capt. Lull of the SE Police District. It might not be enough to cite the dumper but we may be able to contact him to warn him. Thanks for reporting!!

The number was not an active number, but we will keep and eye out for this truck.
