Description

We are so disappointed in the engineering of this situation. We were hoping that Cass Ave. would be widened to 4-lanes all the way over to Gratiot, but that won't happen. Here was (is) a great opportunity to improve a dangerous situation, but it (we assume) will be ignored:

When Cass Ave. construction is completed, it seems the east bound traffic will still have to merge after Groesbeck, as it has been. How old fashioned! Why do we need to encourage bullying, excess competition and our general human nature of bad behavior? Don't we know for certain that rules of bad behavior will prevail every time there is a merge after an intersection (where the road narrows down)?

The current construction plan is SO UNSAFE! Merging traffic creates stress and it is wrong to encourage this. We thought we learned our lessons from all the bad traffic accidents of the past, so we can be more advanced. No way. People are very stressed out right now and this will promote fighting for petty territory - and the road engineering/ designers are messing up big time. All the money spent - and it is being done wrong! What ever happened to "Traffic Calming?"

Heading East on Cass, past Groesbeck, we (local residents and users of Cass Avenue) recommend only ONE LANE open to through traffic and an abrupt curb to prevent any need to merge.

Here's a possible solution:
**Delete the merge sign on the right shoulder (by the Rite-Aid drug store) and replace it with a Right Lane Must Turn Right sign. Then, make it difficult to merge at that area. All traffic must exit ointo the parking lot or else into the first street.

We will be watching for responses and action on this major safety issue.
