Description
The new sidewalks on Pearl st are fantastic. However, only ONE resident on Pearl st between Orange and Pleasant streets on the odd side of the street is maintaining the grass and weeds at the curb. Every other house from Orange to Pleasant street on the odd side of the street has knee high grass and weeds. Is there anything that can be done about this to encourage the homeowners to maintain these spaces?

eliminate the curb strip (Guest)
The lack of maintenance is a problem all over the city. Maybe it's time to try something different, like eliminate the curb strip and either allow property owners to pave the strip, thereby expanding the sidewalk, or eliminating the curb strip altogether and give the extra 30 inches to to the adjacent property owner.
The [suburban] curb strip does not make any sense in many areas of urban New Haven, especially given that many properties don't even have lawns, so someone is expected to buy a lawnmower to cut a strip of grass 30 inches wide by 20 feet long (or pay someone else to do it)? Where does one store a lawnmower and gasoline and oil in an apartment building or multifamily rental property?
I like to see the curb trimmed and edged, but we're talking about New Haven, so it's probably best to just have the option of eliminating the curb strip. No more stepping out of your car and into dog doo, mud or two foot high grass, full of trash.
