Description

Last night in my apartment on Ellsworth Avenue and Elm St., I heard a lot of activity (foot steps, opening and closing of doors) on the second floor of our house. The second floor tenants moved out months ago so I figured that it must have been the first floor house mates rummaging around down there. I did think it was odd, though. It turns out that someone broke into the first floor apartment of our house and was heard (but not seen) running through the first floor apartment this morning when I guess they figured out that someone was home this morning in that apartment. They either broke in to our house by busting the backdoor lock or getting in by way of the basement storm doors. I haven't been home yet today so I don't have crystal clear information yet.

The cops were called by the first floor tenant as soon as she realized that she wasn't alone in her apartment this morning. I have been told that the noise I heard last night was whomever broke in to our house...squatting in the vacant second floor apartment. Not sure if the cops determined this or what. The cops searched the second floor apartment and basement. They didn't find anything but told the girl on the first floor to "call 911 next time you hear someone on the second floor".....not very reassuring advice.

A locksmith came by today to put new locks on the doors. To get to the point, the reason why I am posting this is because I no longer feel safe where I live. I'm terrified and I want to know what I should do right now and in the coming days aside from starting the process to find a new place to live. Is there a neighborhood watch person or any kind of
Help we can get with security? Our landlord seems ambivalent at best about this situation. I'd love him to install security cameras and heavy duty locks to help us feel more secure but I somehow doubt he will help us. Is there anything that a landlord is obligated to do when his/her tenants go through this (aside from just changing the locks)? Who in the Edgewood/Westvill area can we call for help or requests for some kind of group watch? We don't want this to happen to anyone else in the neighborhood and are willing to help do whatever it takes to make people feel safe because right now we feel very unsafe.
