Description
The drug activity being sold out of 1425 N St NW "James Apartments" has now spilled out onto the 1400 Block of N St. NW.
The drug dealers out of "James Apartments" are now selling their drugs out of the hallway of the apartment building next door (1435 N St NW- "Truman House").
Potential drug customers are loitering in front of "Truman House" day and night waiting for the dealer to come out of "James Apartments" and they are entering threw the always open 2 front doors of "Truman House" and transacting drug sales in the hallway. The dealer then goes back inside "James Apartments" and the buyer often lingers on the steps of "Truman House" smoking their purchased drugs.
This is happening daily now, both day and night. They have found an "off the street" location to sell drugs and it has now reached a serious level.
The drug dealers out of "James Apartments" aren't going anywhere as they have been there for years but if "Truman House" would lock their front entrance doors the activity would stop on the sidewalk.
PLEASE, if you see this activity call the police. If we ignore this activity it will grow into more severe activity such as theft, robbery and violence.
"Truman House" is managed by: Urbane Results and their office is inside "Truman House"- PLEASE ask them to lock their front doors.

Are the police aware of the James Apartment issues and this new one? This is worth bringing up at the next ANC meeting, June 27 at 7 pm. at the Washington Plaza. This is also unsettling. I live next to the Truman House and had zero idea this was going on. We're often having to report drug dealing at our wall closest to the Truman House. Yeesh!
A Better Community
The police have been aware of the high number of drug dealers living in The James Apartments for years. The sidewalk drug dealing / loitering (waiting for the dealers) / and sales in the hallway of Truman House has been going on for about 2 months. MPD has been called several times.
As long as the front doors to Truman House remain open this activity will only get worse.
What is sad is the residents/building management of Truman House walk past the activity going on directly on their steps and in their hallway and ignore it.
The activity is very obvious. There is a white transgendered female that is very often in the mix of the sidewalk / hallway activities.

The Truman House Apartments do not have any drug activities occurring inside the building. Like many of our neighbors, we too are very concerned with the ebb and flow of crime in the area. All of our tenants pass a rigorous application approval process that includes reference checks, credit checks and legitimate employment and employment history verifications.
After a few members of the community reported their concerns, we reviewed our CCTV footage and confirmed that no suspicious or criminal activity was taking place within the secured building. We also contacted the local police station and got in touch with the police sergeant who liaises with the block. Since contacting the police, we have received no other reports and with on-site management, we are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
The Truman House does have a call box protected from the elements by an unsecured glass door so guests can announce themselves to residents. Unfortunately this door cannot be locked, otherwise the call box could not be used. The space is exceptionally well lit with over 250 watts of lighting for a 25 square foot entry way. I suspect this is what the posts are referring to when they mention "inside the building".
It is truly a blight on the community when an entire street is brought down by the actions of a few. After picking up tiny drug baggies and beer bottles from the front landscaping for almost a decade, we sincerely wish this otherwise terrific area can get past these common urban plagues.
We ask our residents and the community to call the police when they observe any illegal activity anywhere on the street. We all benefit from safer and crime-free neighborhoods. Being a part of this community, one must live by a montra similar to the post-9/11 PSAs, "If you see something, say something!" Hopefully with all of our combined efforts we can make it known that the community will not tolerate this behavior!

The Truman House has still done nothing about this. The front door still does not have a lock and reports of drug activity and vagrancy in the foyer continue. The management company says it's a police matter and that the owner is not willing to install a lock. This is really frustrating and unsettling for the residents no doubt, as well as for those of us in the immediate area. I suppose we will have to continue relying on the police at taxpayer expense and put this higher on the ANC radar.
Concerned on N Street (Guest)
The Truman House Management Co (Urbane Results) are more concerned with the build out of their roof-top bar/personal party space than to address this issue.

Urbane Results is The Truman House ON-SITE management company. They are located ON-SITE at Truman House. If they spent as much resources on this issue and the betterment of the block as they do on their roof top bar renovations perhaps they could resolve this issue. Though they apparently have no interest in the concerns that are being brought forth. I recommend involving Ward 2 Council Member Jack Evans and his staff at this point.
Regardless of what Truman House (above) says, drugs ARE being sold out of the lobby/foyer of Truman House.
