Description
A man was assaulted by 5 or 6 youths (14 -18) this past Saturday in broad daylight. It was gruesome and I witnessed it first hand. Cops came and took my statement, and the ambulance took the guy away. I'm not going to watch our neighborhood spiral down the toilet. Drug related activity seems to be pulling into our neighborhood since the deli opened. The cops confirmed that they know about 686 Q-Ave. And a nod to the cops, they were parking right in front of the store on Sunday. I"m going to call the landlord and go from there.

Could you describe the victim and the assailants?

Time to get armed, fire with fire. Not going to walk my neighborhood in fear.

I live in the 700 block. This makes me sad to see.

We were very happy to see the new convenience store open and have stopped in several times on our walk home from Grand Bridge. I now hesitate to walk this way, unfortunately this means driving to Grand Bridge or not going at all. If I'm going to drive to dinner it may elsewhere. The nice thing about going to the new restaurant/store is that it's walkable. It really is a shame that this has become a problem so quickly. Police please make this problem go away as fast as it arrived!!!
Unfortunately, Edsicle may have the right idea.

I've spoken to the landlord of the Deli building, 686 Q-Ave. She's well known, Diana Nastri, and owns the Grand Vin building, and houses on Q-Ave, owns & manages Grand Bridge restaurant, and i'm sure others. I got her directly on the phone and told her of the assault and my suspicions about it's relation to the suspected drug activity connected to that building. To her credit she heard me out, and then relayed in detail that she's aware and taking concrete steps. These include warning residents via letter, installing cameras at Ziggy's (which she also owns) cameras in the Deli and getting UI to illuminate the back parking area behind the deli, a natural magnet for all kinds of illegal activity given it 's abandon areas and obscured view from the road. And she stated that she's in touch with Sgt. Vincent Anastasio regarding any illegal activity she suspects. But it will take time and hard evidence, and voluminous documentation, to evict any tenant involved in any illicit activities. So...my only idea now is to start a block patrol. And i'm going to walk the area when i have time and photograph any thing that looks like Sgt. Anastasio should know about. Hopefully others will join me. But I have to emphasize, Diana is not shying away from this problem. It did not exist when she lived over the deli last year, but even though she's moved, she's still trying stop the problem. Plus walking the block will allow me to occasionally photograph the motocross bikes wreaking havoc in the evening. a two-fer!

Thanks for this. I've always been nervous to walk alone right here in my own quiet-seeming neighborhood, mainly because of speeding cars, but this confirms my gut feelings about street crime. This has to be stopped right away before the bad element thinks this is a place they can come and ruin. Kudos to the landlord, who I hope stays pro-active, as she really has a big stake in keeping this nice if she wants the restaurant to succeed. We all want it to succeed. Let's all keep an eye out and take down pictures and information.

Great community involvement...just be safe folks!

First of all Diana Nastri does not own Grand Bridge Restaurant. And this building that houses the so called "Deli" is the same building where a woman was breeding and selling pit bulls out of her home in the upstairs apartment. The reason the drug dealing was not happening while Nastri was a resident was because the store has been vacant for several years. It just recently opened in early spring of 2012. Yes illegal activity is going here. This store does not actually sell anything of real value, and offers single cigarettes, which I am not sure is a legal practice in the state of Connecticut. The recent attack was terrible and the fact that it happened in broad daylight is frightening. This store is nothing more than a bodega front for a thriving drug business that is not welcome in my neighborhood. Please continue to call the non emergency police line and report sightings of such activity. And lastly Ziggy's put the surveillance system in their building because they have been repeatedly robbed. If everyone pulls together something can be done about this.

I don't know where you are getting the info that Diana Nastri owns the Quinnipiac Groceries
buliding, Grand Vin, ziggy's etc. She does NOT OWN this property, she manages it, period. As a Taxpayer you have the right to call the assesor's offce and get the info on who owns property Its fairly obvious are neighborhood is rapidly falling apart, we NEED to step up to the plate, not one person, two people, all of us need to stick together and demand that these people be evicted, period, nothing more or less. You rented to them, not get them the @#$% out of my neighborhood. t hat restaurant will never make it with that crap staring us in the face. cecilia proto

Agree with Resident. According to Vision Appraisal, the owner of 686 Quinnipiac Ave is Dragon Point LLC. According to the Secretary of State's Concord site, Dragon Point LLC's manager/member is Joel Schiavone.
Business Address: 16 E GRAND AVE, NEW HAVEN, CT, 06513
Agent Business Address: 740 QUINNIPIAC AVE, NEW HAVEN, CT, 06513

We all know Schiavone is a slum lord. Ms. Nastri simply collects his rent. The restaurant is a sinking ship, as well as the grocery store. Gran Vin is the only viable business on this side of the river. I hope that we as a collective group continue to support this business, and avoid businesses that are detrimental to this unique community. Notice there are no drug dealers loitering in front of Grand Vin or Ziggy's.

Just spoke with Diana and she clarified that she is not the owner, but the property manager for Dragon Point LLC and two other groups that own property in the area. The two owners for Dragon Point LLC are Carl Youngman and Will DeBonis (not sure on either of the spellings) . I'm going to seek to contact them to make the aware of the issue thought they apparently live in NY and Boston. Can't hurt I figure.
Resident (Guest)
I can assure you that Joel Schiavone owns this property. Why Nastri led you to believe that she did is beyond me. She simply collects the rent. Issues with this particular landlord have been a thorn in the side of Fair Haven for years. Grand Bridge Restaurant is a sinking ship, it would be wise for you to address your concerns to someone other than Ms. Nastri. Someone like the New Haven Police.
Quietly On Q-Ave.
No, you are incorrect. I spoke to Joel Schiavone yesterday. He told me, and Diana confirmed, that Dragon Point LLC. is no longer involved with Joel. Diana may have a partner, and perhaps serves only as a manager for some of the properties like Grand Bridge, but Joel is not involved. Please keep this in mind, I've done the research. And the point remains clear, Diana is the active point person within Dragon Point LLC. And think about it, as an active business person, one you can find nightly working in our neighborhood, she's going to want to fix this issue. I've already mentioned the incident to some folks who are very active in our community, dine at Grand Bridge regularly, and have promised to ask her about the issue when they next see Diana. Now THAT is the very best kind of pressure you could ask for. And another nod to cops, I saw some teens acting as lookouts for suspicious activity involving the Deli/2nd floor at 686 Q Ave, so I called the non-emergency number, and the cops had two patrol cars there in less than 10 minutes. And another person in the neighborhood told me that the cops were in the store when they come from work at 5pm, which was an hour or so before I called. Gotta be happy with that type of support from law enforcement.

Ask Ms. Nastri why she lets her tenants above Deli to breed pitbulls in a tiny apartment with kids living there.

I think there are two important points to keep in mind:
One, the neighborhood does not want slumlords and/or drug dealers in the area, and Two, we have the power to join together to do something about it. Please, if you feel strongly about these issues, come to the public meeting this evening at St James Church. We can work as a group to put pressure on the landlords, lurkers, and other undesireables. Communicating our concerns to Brenda Jones-Barnes and the police can only help.

Why Nastri even led you to believe that she was the owner is beyond me. And I can promise you Joel Schiavone is indeed the owner of these properties. If you look at New Haven online, you will also notice that the Grand Bridge restaurant property is behind on taxes. Going to the landlord, owner will not help in this case. This sort of shady business has been going on for years. Have you thought about contacting the media? WTNH nor The New Haven Independent reported on this bicycle assault. The only way to get these people out is to make them unwelcome.

Quiet I admire your gusto. However after 20+ years of living in this area very little has changed. I will not be at any meeting, but I wish you well in your endeavor. Forgive me if I sound apathetic, I have been in your shoes and no longer have any belief in this city.

We had a great meeting last night hosted by our Alderwoman, Brenda Jones Barnes. On this drug dealer issue we've decided a couple of things. The one I will be 'captain' of will be the Block Watch. I'm going to call Sgt. Anastasio for a meeting and get a primer on how to proceed. I'll be posting here with details of the group as they happen. thanks, Larry.

something happened again, Wednesday night, don't know what yet, two squad cars, one block up from Deli . I will let you know, and if anyone else knows post it. the bottom line, these tenants need to be evicted, period, end of story.

Hi Cecilia, i'll text Sgt Vinnie and see what he knows. thx, Larry.
