Make or female? About how big? Not my cat. Just hoping we can get enough info out to identify him/her so that his/her owner, or someone else who may know him/her can easily recognize him/her.
This cat was on my back porch last night. I reported this same cat twice--last fall and last spring. He/she hung around my house off and on for weeks and weeks with a damaged foot and needing food. No one ever claimed him but he did not show up all summer until last night. It looks like he is more comfortable with humans now. It also seems he has been abandoned again. Since you can get close to him, you might take him to a shelter or keep him. Let us know which you decide. I can help if you are not able.
If no one can keep him, please don't dump him in a shelter. Try somewhere like the New Haven Cat Project. They will get him the vet care he needs and he will be kept safe.
Thank you for posting. Please make an big effort to ask all your neighbors if the cat belongs to them or if they recognize the cat. Our family cat of 18 years who was under veterinary care, was recently taken off our property by would-be "rescuer" who then promptly had him euthanized.
Do you have contact info for the Cat Project? There has been an extended family of feral cats in this area for years. The Cat Project trapped some and gave kittens away and spayed and neutered some of them. I got one that was one of the best behaved cats I ever had. Sometimes they like to stay outside in the same yard, and just get fed and petted once in awhile, and sheltered in bad weather.
Thank you Lawrence St Neighbor for specific info on the Cat Project. I consider the New Haven Cat Project a shelter. Although she will tell you she is not really a shelter, she will assist and take in cats if it is at all possible. Because I have known of this cat's off and on wanderings for more than a year now, and have searched for missing cats that fit his description, and have checked with local vets who may have treated him, I felt that if someone had the ability to take him in or shelter him, that he would probably have a better home than he does now begging from house to house. It is possible that he has a new owner who is taking care of him and he just happened to wander for a couple of days. You're right. It's worth another search for his owner. In the meantime, he'd be safer in a foster or shelter provision. If he comes to my home again and he us willing to get into a carrier, I will have him examined and call the cat project.
Thanks, Celeste! I always worry about taking in apparent strays, just in case they are someone's "outdoor" cat. Given the perils of our neighborhood, however, I often think they shouldn't be "outdoor" cats!
It sounds as if this guy is indeed a stray. Thank you for caring about him. It would be great to get him into foster care and ultimately into a home where he will be loved as he deserves and won't have the option to wander. Don't mean to sound judgemental, but it just doesn't sound like this guy is really cared for by anyone, but strangers.
